Senate debate sharpens as proponents push a beer amendment to fund budget needs. Senator Bingham estimates a six dollar per barrel tax would raise at least 375 million dollars and replace various taxes with beer revenue. Prohibitionists resist while rubber interests seek hearings on a five cent per pound tariff.
An unofficial vote count shows Senator Albert Lebrun elected president of the Third French Republic by the National Assembly. He has already become ad interim president following last week's assassination of President Paul Deumer.
In Cleveland on May 10 delegates of the Twenty-Ninth Quedrennial Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church considered suspending Bishop W. T. Vernon of Arkansas for a $17,360 church funds shortage. After a three day trial the Episcopal Committee found him guilty and delegates voted 480 to 158 to suspend him for four years without pay. Further action against other bishops rumored in financial mismanagement was to be discussed by the Episcopal Committee.
A new 14 foot 4 candle power light standard is being tested on East State Street with a second unit on South Court Street as part of planned street lighting upgrades. Rufus C. Hopkins says the newer standard differs from the previous 12 foot 250 candle power fixture moved from Court and Washington Streets to Hast State Street.
Delegates at the 47th annual convention of the National Retail Meat Dealers Association in Toledo applaud a call to repeal the 18th Amendment and permit return of wines and beer.

Captain W. N. Lancaster British aviator and manager of Mrs. Keith Miller Australian flier faces a first degree murder indictment over the death of Haden Clarke, her alleged sweetheart. Grand Jury in Dade County returned the indictment after Clarke died April 21 in a cottage shared by Mrs. Keith Miller and Lancaster. Lancaster had a revolver purchase in St. Louis before traveling to Florida.
At a hearing before Mayor Robert Wood Monday night in Prattville Guy Sapp pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and was fined 100 dollars plus costs with a six month license revocation. Other hearings before Mayor Wood in Athens and The Plains saw Emory Bat and Skip Carsey fined five dollars and costs for intoxication.
Workers at the Goodyear Zeppelin plant in Akron prepare the Macon sister ship of the Dirigible U S for completion. The 785 foot framework will be finished by July 1 with metal rib coverings due next fall and the Macon set to join Akron as a scouting dirigible early in 1950. Six of eight engine rooms are in place within 500 feet of framework.
In a foggy Primary Day Southeast Ohio, about a thousand candidates cheered while canvassing. In Pomeroy hopefuls mingled with crowds mistaken for voters. Athens candidates discussed a charity baseball game, later proposed tug of war. Hocking County saw agricultural nerves, and attempts to games with sheriff contenders were thwarted by prisoner limits in Athens County. A parade permit for Recorder hopefuls was denied in Athens.
Heavy morning voting reported at noon as Athens County electors went to the polls under a threatening sky. Total county vote expected near 12,000 with about 44 000 Republicans and 3 500 Democrats casting ballots as showers threaten to reduce turnout. locals will see road work contracts awarded to Fred H Beckler with 12 697.02 bid.
The Athens County Red Cross continues flour aid with 2400 racks distributed in Trimble Township to provide two weeks per family. Waterloo Township gets three weeks. Athens Township and City Hall operate distribution as more names are added to eligible lists. Dover Township will receive 1070 sacks Wednesday from 1 to 4 pm under Rev. Gilbert Courtney’s committee guidance.
Dr. Isaac B. Miller district superintendent of the Methodist Church repudiated a $500 Ohio pastors letter urging Myers Y. Cooper as anti-prohibition governor candidate. Miller said he withdrew his name from the letter and believes Brown remains true to the prohibition cause.
Norfolk group negotiators struggle to reestablish trust with the Lindbergh kidnapers represented by John Hughes Curtis. Delays persist as associates blame a destroyer flotilla and publicity for harming protective plans. Curtis has been missing since Friday, with delivery of the baby uncertain and secrecy demanded.
Millersburg Ohio May 10 Herbert Meeker 23 a Wayne County farmer faced extended questioning over the death of his wife Gertrude 14 whose nude body was found in Killbuck Creek SE of the village. Prosecutor Estill said Meeker denied knowledge of the murder after she disappeared following a quarrel.
An advanced recital by Dorothy Cosgrave and Uclen Stephens will be presented this evening at Music Hall Auditorium. Cosgrave studies under Mrs. C. C. Robinson and Stephens under Miss Joy Cutler.

Mrs. Clara A McAdoo widow of T H McAdoo died Monday night at her East State Street home after illness since last November. Born in Roseville she lived in Athens 20 years and was active in First Methodist Church and Red Cross during World War I. Funeral Thursday at 1 PM at home with Rev C M Coulter. burial in Roseville. Survived by daughter Madge, son Drood, granddaughter Mia, two sisters Miss Jane Roseville and Miss Inez Alexander.
