Dien Bien Phu Falls as French Defenses Collapse

Employment Up 260,000 Since March

The government reported a drop in unemployment of 260,000 in April marking the first decline since October. Employment rose by 498,000 from March to April, increasing from 60,100,000 to 60,598,000 as unemployment stood at 3,465,000.

Candidate Shot Self After Primary Defeat

Winston W. Hill, 45, of Washington Court House, was in fair condition at Mt. Carmel Hospital with a bullet wound to the left lung in what police called a personal safety related incident. Hill, a former Columbus attorney and Washington Court House city manager, was defeated Tuesday in the Republican primary for state senator from the 5th and 6th District.

Insurance Killing Charged to Mother

Police hold Mrs. Marion Harrell of Columbus for the strangling of her three month old son to collect 490 dollars in insurance money. The infant’s father Sylvester, 33, is not detained. Authorities said charges would be filed today.

Ohio Bank Holdup Nets 12000 to 15000 in Cash

MASSILLON Ohio Two men robbed the Exchange Bank Co at Canal Fulton nine miles north of here taking an estimated 12000 to 15000 dollars from drawers and a vault. They forced manager Paul Blank two clerks and a customer to lie on the floor and used a German luger and a snub-nosed revolver. Police reported four men in a gold Buick seen nearby and road blocks were set across the area.

Two Day Strike Ends At Kyger Creek Plant

Huntington West Virginia P H Dillon business agent for local 3% of the AFL Teamsters and Chauffeurs Union said a two day strike at the Kyger Creek power plant north of Gallipolis ended today. The teamsters quit work in protest of the firing of a fellow member and all craft unionists engaged in construction of the big power plant respected their picket lines. Dillon said the dismissed unionist was re employed.

Cincinnati Mayor Waldvogel Dies After Illness

Cincinnati mayor Edward N. Waldvogel, who began in politics in 1992 by defeating late U S Senator Taft for the state Senate, died early today at Good Samaritan Hospital at age 59. He had been ill since January from jaundice linked to a severely inflamed liver.
