Boy Drowns in Pond Near West Columbia Farm
Nine year old Monty Zell Stitt, resident of West Columbia, fell into a farm pond on Olivier Lieving’s Kaylong property Saturday and drowned. Companions alerted locals, Miss Winnie Van Meter and soldier assisted, physician failed to revive after about an hour. Born June 29, 1941 in Cleveland, he was the son of Theresa Inley Stitt and had a sister Patty with grandparents in Middleport and West Columbia. Funeral set for Tuesday at 2:30 pm at EVUB Church in West Columbia with burial at Gravel Hill Cheshire.

23 Airmen Die In B-36 Crash At Kirtland
A giant B-36 bomber crashed during landing at Kirtland Air Force Base near Albuquerque killing 23 airmen. The disaster marks the fifth and worst crash since the Air Force began operating the 14%-ton six engined super bomber in August.
