Gov James A Rhodes warns that welfare spending will break Ohio and its communities if not curbed. He tells industrialists at the Billion Dollar luncheon that solutions lie with the private sector and job holders rather than welfare offices.
Sen. Gaylord Nelson says cyclamate poses health risks including high blood pressure liver disease and skin irritation. He urges that products using cyclamate be sold only by prescription and notes tens of millions could be exposed to the dangers through cyclamate sweetened foods and pills.
Athens city council approves wide ranging plans for downtown and surrounding districts. The document notes ongoing public input and projected impact on development and zoning in the area.
Navy Secretary John H. Chafee refused to act on the court of inquiry findings that Cmd Lloyd Bucher and Lt. Stephen R. Harris should be courtmartialed over the Pueblo seizure on January 23, 1968. He said they had suffered enough and ordered no disciplinary action.
North Vietnamese troops pressed the border warfare with a major assault on a patrol base named Carolyn in War Zone C six miles northwest of Saigon. The clash involved about 900 enemy troops, with U S forces countering using artillery helicopters and fighter bombers. US officials reported 101 enemy and 9 American killed and 62 Americans wounded, plus 29 enemy surrendering.
Congress shows little chance of action or impeachment against Justice Abe Fortas over a fee from Louis Wolfson's family foundation. Senate Judiciary Chairman Eastland cites jurisdiction issues, while House chair Ceilar rejects impeachment moves even as Life magazine reports Fortas returned a $20,000 fee after delays. Fortas abstained on a related appeal and denies improper conduct.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees suspended six staff representatives including executive director A Buslik and the seven member board of trustees of Council 21 amid accusations of fund misuse. A trusteeship was named to run the union as investigations proceed with about 22 locals involved.
Mrs. Howard P. McJunkin, 47, fled from her abductors after a pistol shot jacketed the chase. The captors, a man and a woman, fled in a blue sedan triggering a manhunt across West Virginia Kentucky and Ohio.
