First Lutheran Church Built West of Alleghenies Near New Haven
Arris Jog structure near New Haven County stands as the first Lutheran church west of the Alleghenies. Erected on land given by Abraham Roush in 1819, the building is now a stable, two stories, with a mid staircase landing for ministers to address congregants on both floors. The Roush family aided several early congregations in Gallia and Mason County regions, tied to German immigrant clergy and the Virginia United Brethren Mission. In a separate note, frosted Capitol glass shattered a Washington door injuring Rep. Edna Kelly.

West Columbia church founder and pastor's complex legacy
The article recounts a church builder who raised a two story edifice with a school above in West Columbia. Before the Civil War he sold West Columbia holdings and moved to Towa, then served as presiding elder over ten churches in Missouri. Mason County records show the West Columbia brick church leased to the Odd Fellows in 1860 for ten years at 2.50 per year. In 1861 the pastor supported secret societies, a stance that was heavily opposed at a General Conference in Westerville as he traveled to Ohio from churches beyond the Mississippi River.
