Washington police report 200 arrests as federal troops withdraw from the capital while 7000-plus detainees from Monday’s actions appear to have ended the planned three day disruption. Traffic eases with troops redeployed to suburbs.
Kent State University in Kent Ohio held a candlelight vigil and memorial service to mark the death of four students killed by National Guardsmen on May 4 1970. About 2000 students gathered near Blanket Hill and paid silent tribute in half hour shifts through midnight. Ahern a member of the Presidents Commission criticized President Nixon for not ending the war in Indochina and urged gun control while Dick Gregory condemned government actions toward antiwar demonstrators. May Day Coalition distributed handbills during the event.
Washington police arrested several pedestrians for jaywalking and ignoring red lights as they enforced all laws in the district. Pedestrians were placed in police paddy wagons amid the crackdown.
Army Secretary Stanley R. Resor said progress on Vietnamization is encouraging but a difficult period lies ahead as more American combat troops are withdrawn. He noted the advisory effort becomes increasingly important and praised the capable personnel in advisory teams.
Five lawsuits seeking more than 57 million dollars were filed in Cleveland in connection with the Kent State shootings a year earlier. Defendants include former Governor James A. Rhodes former Adjutant General Sylvester Del Corso Brig. Gen. Robert H Canterbury and 37 Ohio National Guard officers and enlisted men plus 200 John Doe defendants.
