The April unemployment rate rose to 8.9 percent as total jobless hit 8,176,000, while total employment increased 240,000 to 84.1 million and the labor force climbed to 92.3 million. Adult men accounted for over half of the April employment gain amid broader industry declines.
In Washington AP congressional leaders plan a new bill to aid Vietnamese refugees without troop-evacuation authority. The House rejected a 327 million dollar aid measure 246 to 162, drawing Ford's insistence that US troops not be sent back to Vietnam.
The HEW proposed blocking welfare payments to mothers who refuse to identify the father of their child while offering up to 20 dollars monthly for cooperating. Applicants would need Social Security numbers and records could be shared with nonwelfare officials to collect child support. Public comments welcome within 30 days ahead of a July 1 implementation.
