In Columbus AP report states a last ditch effort to revive the oleomargarine bill may occur in the House tonight after it was tabled 71 to 59. Senate approval exists but revival motions may be used to overturn the table. If not revived the measure could die before November referendum deadlines.
A two day series of tornadoes lashed the South and Southwest killing nine people and injuring about one hundred. Damage is estimated at two million dollars with major impacts in Oklahoma where sixteen tornadoes caused five deaths and about seventy five injuries near Norman. Four fatalities occurred in Texas and nine injuries reported near Homer Louisiana with destruction of homes and barns.
Two city prison trusties, cooks on the fourth floor, attempted an escape using a stolen saw and an improvised rope. They replaced a dormitory bar, hid in prison clothes beneath garb, and walked away during a turnkeys change. Suspects Stanley Scott and James Dement were being sought.
Shanghai reports rail service halted on the Hangchow Nanchang line as Communist pressure grows in South China. Inside the city the money market collapsed after the garrison banned free silver trading under threat of death, signaling deepening turmoil. Kunshan near Shanghai remains under Nationalist control.
The Ohio Mental Hygiene Association endorsed Gov Lausche and Welfare Director Lamneck proposals to expand the state receiving hospital network. Executive secretary Mrs Marion B Wells said the plan would increase funds and add units at Cincinnati and Portsmouth, boosting eight existing facilities.
In Honolulu CIO dock workers struck at midnight with about 2000 members demanding 32 cents more per hour. The current wage is $1.40, and the stoppage threatens the flow of food and commodities to the territory.
The Romanian government told the British legation verbally that it would be inopportune for Britain to keep open its two consulates outside Bucharest. The move follows Romania's announcement that the consulates should be closed.
A Parma, Ohio, pilot died when a light passenger plane crashed about 26 miles southeast of here on Saturday. His wife and two year-old child were injured in the accident.
Cleveland judge Daniel Edgar Morgan died at 71 in his Cleveland Heights home after a long illness following an operation. A Harvard Law School graduate and former City Manager, he served on the Court of Appeals from 1939 and was noted for a 1946 no children no pets eviction ruling and an anti-lynching march two years ago. His funeral is set for Amasa Stone Chapel at Western Reserve University. He is survived by his widow Wilma and daughter Mrs Armand B Leavelle of Palo Alto.
A slight earthquake was felt around 6:30 am near Cincinnati at Xavier University with Fr. Victor Stechschulte uncertain if connected to a California tremor. Earlier, Southern Los Angeles woke to a minor quake centered mainly in South Gate, causing rattled walls but no damage.
Israeli troops clashed with Arabs near Jerusalem and Bethlehem in a brief night duel. Jewish sources cite Arabs resisting removal from a strategic position under the armistice with Trans-Jordan. an Israeli spokesman says relations with Trans-Jordan and the Arab Legion remain undisturbed.
INDIANAPOLIS Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg told 500 members of the American Legion Sunday night that a 48-group Air Force can guarantee no more than prevention of early defeat and hope of eventual victory in event of war. The Air Force chief of staff cited President Truman's 1950 budget plan, which would cut the Air Force from 59 groups to 48 by July 1.
An American consul and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Bowe of Holyoke Massachusetts, were arrested Sunday in Prague for photographing the May Day parade. Police freed them after an hour. Bowe heads the office issuing travel permits in the American British French zones of Germany.
Rescue workers resumed the search for Dr. Paul H. Schiller a 40 year old Orange Park Florida resident and former Hungarian psychologist who slipped from the headwall of Tuckerman Ravine into a 100 foot crevice and was believed killed in the fall following melting snow forming the crack.
Florence E. Dolph of Scranton dies Sunday at age 101 18 days shy of her 102nd birthday. Born May 19 1847 in Dickson City Pa she moved to California in 1902 lived there 44 years and later returned to Scranton.
The United Shoe Workers of America CIO contract with Selby Shoe Co was extended yesterday to May 13. The union negotiating committee was authorized to call a strike today over wage disagreements.
Gloucester sailor Captain Irving Johnson reports from the Pacific Island of Rapa where women outnumber men seven to one. He notes a crewman was briefly kidnapped but rescued during the Yankee's 18 month circumnavigation on a 96 foot brigantine.
The report says a date for lifting the Russian blockade of Berlin could be set this week as negotiators move toward ending the blockade. Dr. Philip Jessup and Jacob Malik reportedly signaled progress with secrecy over talks, with a London paper hinting the end of the first week in June as a possible lifting date.
A threatened walkout by about 600 drivers and workers from three truck drive-away firms in Springfield failed to develop today, avoiding disruption to local operations.

In Stuttgart Germany recruit Russell Jones 22 of Fall River Massachusetts is to be held on a charge of premeditated murder for killing three Germans. He is also accused of appropriating an army jeep after seizing a guard's carbine and shooting the guard then two German women one of whom was killed and a civilian later in Schneidingen.
Two youths from Youngstown Ohio, Lyman Ransdell and George L Ashton, pleaded guilty to the March 9 Ambassador train holdup near Martinsburg W Va. They await sentencing by Federal Judge Harry E Watkins with potential penalties up to 40 years each. About 100 passengers were robbed of roughly $1000.
Detroit observes May Day rally where Henry A. Wallace denounces Senator Arthur H. Van denberg as author of a pact for war. Wallace claims Van denberg led the North Atlantic Pact behind an anti Communist mask, equating it to a holy war on Russia and comparing it to Hitler.
Fifteen common pleas judges met in Defiance to approve a journal entry creating the Maumee Watershed Conservancy District. The new district, under the Maumee Watershed Conservancy Court, will provide flood control and soil conservation across 15 northwestern Ohio counties.
William Wheeler Jr aged 13 died from stab wounds after an incident at Minford High School last week. Two other boys were playing in a corridor when one accidentally struck Wheeler. The death occurred yesterday with investigators examining the circumstances.
Judge Roy D. Willians urged the May term grand jury to investigate gambling rumors in Athens County. The charge cited schemes of chance and numbers rackets and directed jurors to determine truth and presentments. Two jurors were absent, replaced by Kiam Konkter and Ralph Palmer.
