Corn Planters Urged to Complete Crop by May 10

Southeastern Ohio farmers should finish planting the 1930 corn crop by May 10 to ensure abundant yields. S. C. Hartman of the Washington County and Carpenter Test Farms warns that every day past May 10 reduces yield chances. Early planting aids maturity and reduces frost risk. Reed's Yellow Dent, Heidelberger's Pride, and Washington County Reed are recommended varieties. Fertilizer with planter-attached applicators speeds establishment, boosts fall maturity by up to ten days, and increases yield and quality. For Southeastern Ohio soils 4-16-4 or 5-15-5 blends are advised, and plowing alfalfa or clover fields helps an early start.
