Coolidge Tightens Grip on GOP Ahead of Cleveland Convention

President Coolidge has assumed direct control of the Republican Party machinery as Cleveland looms. He named Theodore Burton as temporary chairman, accepting John T. Adams’s resignation and naming William M. Butler as national chairman. Butler may pursue a senate bid in Massachusetts but is expected to focus on electing Coolidge. The president aims to decide on a permanent chairman, a nominating speaker, and a running mate, with Idaho’s Borah a potential nominating speaker and the West favored for the vice presidency. Adams’s exit ends a era of dissent with the White House, and a broader reorganization of the national committee follows the convention.
