Gov Lausche orders State Highway Patrol to investigate bombing of candidate for sheriff in Newton Falls Ohio. Mayor Joseph Baldine of Hubbard, a Democrat candidate, spoke at Newton Falls community building when a blast rocked the hall and shattered several windows. His car was found blown apart as about 300 residents gathered outside.
Rep Secrest says Senator Taft agreed to back funds to repair a century-old dam on the Muskingum River after a portion washed out. Taft discussed the plan with Secrest and a Zanesville delegation.
A pink-skinned, pink-eyed albino colt named Silver Mist was foaled April 12 at the Williams farm on Harrisonville Road Meigs County. Sired by Lee's Silver Duke and Golden Lily Palominos, the rare foal joins 11 horses on the farm as the Williams children figure to grow up with horses.
The federal grand jury in Cleveland opens its first probe into gambling narcotics traffic and rackets in northern Ohio. First witnesses include Safety Director Alvin J. Sutton and Police Chief Frank W. Story with Akron Canton and Youngstown law chiefs to testify later. U S Attorney John J. Kane Jr said immunity not guaranteed for racketeers who testify.
Members of the AFL Excavating and Building Materials Drivers Union vote 534 to 44 to strike against fifty building supply firms across Cleveland.
The nationwide strike by about 90,000 unionized oil industry workers nears day two, causing gasoline shortages in Gary Hammond East Chicago and other Midwest stations. Talks with Shell cut wage demands to 22 cents while shifts and other pay differentials are debated. Ohio Fuel Gas says supply remains uncertain though current gas from out of state continues arriving normally.

A Portsmouth delegation visiting the White House aimed to push the campaign climate with AEC Chairman Gordon Dean while Rep Polk hopes to arrange a meeting.
The Agriculture Department bought 13.7 million pounds of pork on Wednesday to lift hog prices, following a 12 million pound purchase last week. Additional buys are planned next week and will be distributed to schools under the government lunch program.
Soviet air bases in eastern Germany halted almost all fighter flights on Wednesday following a MIG jet attack on an Air France airliner. Only Saxony training sorties continued, with major bases Elstal Schoenfeld and Dallgow shut and coalitions over the incident unchanged. In separate news, seven cottages burned at Buckeye Lake injuring none, with losses estimated at forty to fifty thousand dollars.

The Steubenville Coal & Mining Co. mine, serving the city for 97 years, closed on Wednesday. President John J. Sherrard blamed rising costs from the United Mine Workers of America led by John L. Lewis for the shutdown. The mine’s shafts run beneath most of the city and its tipple sits nine blocks from the waterfront.
Office workers at B. F. Goodrich Co in Akron voted 531 to 497 against representation by the CIO United Rubber Workers Local 5. The result bars unionizing at this facility.

Belem Brazil authorities and U S air forces combed a stormy area for signs of survivors from a Pan American flight that vanished Tuesday with 50 aboard. Nine crew and ten passengers were American. Flights were partly called off due to thunder storms. Twenty seven planes took part on Wednesday.
Newark reports the prosecution prepared to finish its case in the first degree murder trial of Louis Allen Angel an 18 year old Marine private accused of killing Allen Drake aged 43 in Columbus His fiancee Peggy Fowler 14 testified she skipped classes at Utica High to be with Angel saying she loves him and would wait even if he goes to prison She recalled meeting him in St Louisville near Newark while he worked with a carnival
In Washington a new move seeks to draft Gov. Adlai E. Stevenson of Illinois for the Democratic presidential nomination. Stevenson has said he cannot accept a presidential run while serving as governor, though friends in Washington suggest he might be willing to help the party from the White House if called.
A Baltimore and Ohio passenger train struck a truck at a crossing near here Wednesday. James A. Tucker, 60, of Sabina, was killed in the crash.
Early returns show Eisenhower with a wide margin in the Massachusetts presidential primary. With 1704 of 1739 precincts reporting he leads Taft 240,724 to 104,247 in write-ins and has 15,583 on the Democratic line, securing 27 of 28 delegates. Taft disputes the count, citing 336 delegates, while Young says Western elections will decide.
The U S Court of Appeals by a 5 to 4 vote refused to bar the government from raising wages of steel workers while it holds the seized mills. The decision keeps the seizure in effect pending Supreme Court review and preserves federal control over the mills and the steel strike.
The State Department bans American travel in five iron curtain countries without permission and bars all travel in three others, citing dangers where protections do not prevail. China, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia remain under total travel prohibition as part of ongoing rulings.
