The Messenger announces the annual Cooking and Home Making School opens next Tuesday at 9 am in Schine's Athena Theater led by Miss Margaret King. Tickets are free, with room for all. many neighborhood groups plan to attend and men are welcome too.
Federal officials launch a double headed drive to restore NRA wage features through state laws and a new national bill. President Roosevelt says state laws are inadequate to guarantee subsistence wages. Miss Perkins states legislatures may pass subsistence wage statutes. Plans include a 40 hour work week and industry councils to set wage scales.
Chrysler Corporation efforts to end a 24 day walkout at nine Detroit plants reached a stalemate. Walter P. Chrysler and John L. Lewis were in New York for urgent business and talks with coal operators, while UAW’s board of strategy blocked compromise on exclusive bargaining rights.
Gen Francisco Franco's southern army faced possible annihilation as four Loyalist columns tried to encircle them in the Sierra Morena passes north of Cordoba. In Nelsonville at week's end Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hewitt Frank Douglas and Russell Douglas attended funerals for Harry Douglas and his sister in law Miss Eleanora McElroy. They were killed when their car was struck by a passenger train in Painesville Ohio. Mr. Douglas was a nephew of Frank Douglas and formerly lived in The Plains.
92 year old Civil War veteran David R. Edwards dies at home in Greenfield Township Gallia County. Born in Wales he was a lifelong farmer. Several sons and daughters survive. Funeral services held at Bethel Church near the Edwards homestead.
Columbus Ohio. Senate to begin hearings Thursday on three permanent relief bills to fund state aid measures. House Taxation Committee already considered tax proposals including a 3 percent utility tax and increases to liquid fuel admissions and sales taxes. A stop gap plan was favored to move relief before adjournment.
An 18 year old youth Thomas Smith was charged with the stabbing death of Mary Ellen Babcock after an alleged wake encounter. He signed a confession saying an uncontrollable impulse drove the slaying but denied criminal assault. Pierce Fitzgerald may collect part of a $3,000 reward.
Arnold Riffle, 36, pleaded guilty to manslaughter after driving while intoxicated on August 7. Judge W R White suspended his driving privileges for one year and ordered court costs. He collided with a vehicle carrying WPA workers, injuring one man, Axel Meadows, who died the next day.

Tobin and Matthew Crank, colored farmers, found $6500 Tuesday after probing a battered kettle on their farm. They planned to buy a mule and red dress goods for women with the money. Local residents suspect the cash was buried long ago by Littleton Land, former farm owner who died in 1885.
Conrad Wein of Nelsonville dies at his Chestnut Street home at 4 30 am after a six weeks battle with asthma and heart trouble. A miner's official for 29 years until 1930, he was known across the Hocking Valley for fidelity and integrity. Born in Germany, he came to America at age two, worked in salt mines near Hartford before joining the Hocking Valley coal industry and remained active in miners' unions and contract negotiations.
Nelsonville report: William Brooks Shoe Co announces a 7 percent gain in piece rates for about 200 workers, raising annual payroll by roughly twenty thousand dollars. The new schedule takes effect April 1 as the Nelsonville factory runs full time.

Ohio officials issued a mandatory wage scale effective May 1 for restaurant and hotel workers. The plan covers over 35 000 women and children with different rates by city size and a separate schedule for service and non service workers, plus part time and overtime provisions. Chapman's order aims to enforce the scale in courts. about 7 500 employees already covered, with dry cleaning and laundry firms included in estimates of affected workers.
Governor Davey signed a bill changing how county commissioners vacancies are filled. The new method appoints the other commissioners and the county engineer, replacing the former process by the probate judge, auditor and recorder. The law takes effect immediately due to an emergency clause while Davey remains ill at home in Kent.
