Anchorage residents cope in the wake of a blast that scarred the city. Soldiers guard deserted streets while civilians queue for water from large supply trucks and for typhoid shots at a school. Soup lines form in the park as fatigue and shock linger.
A heavy Easter Sunday snowstorm blanked the Chicago area with widespread whiteout conditions and disrupted travel and activities across the Windy City. Weather officials warned of continuing accumulations and officials urged caution for residents and commuters.

More than 300 buildings four blocks deep on 29 blocks demolished and damages estimated at 50 million dollars. Cars flipped and inventories wiped out as the city braces for aid and rebuilding.
McArthur in Vinton County appoints Ted Boring as acting postmaster starting Saturday, succeeding the late J E Rosser who died unexpectedly. Boring will need to resign his state representative seat to take the post.
President Johnson extends Easter holiday at the LBJ Ranch in Texas. No new appointments announced as the stay today enters its fifth day and the pattern continues.
Former astronaut John H. Glenn Jr. withdrew from the Ohio U S Senate race due to injuries from a bathroom fall. Glenn said a campaign would hinder his health and recovery and reported plans to remove his name from the Democratic ballot. General Douglas MacArthur remains in critical condition at Walter Reed Hospital after a third operation in 24 days. Doctors report a grave kidney condition and a recurrence of esophageal bleeding, with sedation, IV fluids, blood transfusions, and oxygen support ongoing through the night. Mrs Joan Merriam Smith 27 of Long Beach California left Surinam for Natal Brazil after eight days for fuel tank repairs. her twin engine Piper Apache tanks were repaired Sunday.
James F. Bell said Glenn staff will cease formal activity but Glenn’s name stays on the May 5 ballot. Officials note he could win the nomination without Ohio campaigning if he gains more votes than incumbent U S Senator Stephen M Young.
In Naples, Italy, 45 people were killed when an Alitalia Viscount crashed on Mt. Vesuvius while approaching Naples in fog and rain. Authorities opened three investigations as families waited for identification, aided by dental charts. The 40 passengers included 8 Americans, 20 French, 7 Italians, 4 Swiss, and 1 English woman. all five crew were Italian.
The presidential commission on the JFK assassination reports no evidence of a political plot. Sources say findings indicate the crime was the irrational act of a single individual.
In Washington the annual White House Easter egg roll was canceled due to snow. Two inches had fallen by 7 a.m. with a forecast of up to five inches expected.
Fire early Sunday destroyed the Caudill residence on Liverly Creek near Creola north of McArthur. Discovered around 1:30 a.m. by a Route 93 motorist, the blaze was beyond control despite McArthur volunteers responding. The Caudills and their five children were away. cause undetermined.
Vatican speeches during Holy Week present a hardening stance against communism while urging Christian unity. In the Good Friday address he likened Communist treatment of Catholics to crucifixion and in the Easter address urged atheists to seek God, signaling a firmer Vatican line.
