House leaders push a bill to extend current corporate and excise tax rates for a year, delaying about 3 billion dollars in cuts. Senate and House conferees accepted the Senate version, with talks of possible individual tax cuts next year amid a projected 2.3 billion dollar deficit.
British Labor leaders dropped plans to expel Aneurin Bevan after he promised to toe the party line. The National Executive accepted Bevan’s pledge at a three hour meeting as the party seeks unity ahead of a possible general election this summer or fall.
Eight inmates ended a 65 hour prison uprising at the Nebraska State Penitentiary and freed three hostages two guards and another prisoner after assurances from Governor Anderson. The guards Eugene Swanson and Warren Miller were released first and all hostages were unharmed. The hostages and rebels left the maximum security building for a warm meal as the governor moved to resolve the crisis.
In Forward Township police pursued a car for 15 miles at speeds near 90 mph before stopping it. Driver James Fleming, 13, and passenger Victor Aerosana, 12, were arrested on multiple charges and handed to juvenile authorities. The vehicle was returned to Fleming’s mother.
The Mickey Jelke vice trial enters final stages as closing arguments wrap up. Defense attorney George Washington Hertz completed presenting evidence yesterday and the jury is to hear the case tomorrow.

In Frankfurt Germany a seven member military court, including three officers and four enlisted men, found Pvt William Verdine, a Soviet prisoner, guilty of being absent without leave. The defense offered no testimony. The maximum punishment is six months imprisonment, a dishonorable discharge and loss of pay and allowances, estimated between $10,000 and $12,000.
The CIO Auto Workers Union urged a fund equal to one dollar per member for 11 million workers to finance organizing drives for non union workers, to be pooled after the AFL-CIO merger. Meany welcomed the idea while signaling a broader organizing effort post merger and voiced support for a common strike fund.
In Harrisburg the House considers a bipartisan bill to privilege printed statements by public officials issued in official duties. The measure covers elected and appointed officers and requires accuracy or fair abridgement for protection, with defamation not sole purpose of harm.
A hillside tunnel dug by 11 year old boys Dan Myers and John Percoco collapsed in Staten Island. Rescuers freed them within minutes but attempts to revive the youths failed.

James Walls 75 was indicted for manslaughter and his daughter Ethel Zirkles 39 was indicted on shooting with intent to wound. They were arrested March 15 after the husband Jess 42 testified. Sam Brown 32 of Mt Sterling Ky was indicted for shooting with intent to kill in the November 20 shooting of Albert Kearns of Cincinnati.
In Columbus an angry crowd of about 110 veterans rejected a contractor's plan to buy back their homes. The dispute centers on construction problems like cracked ceilings and defective furnaces and asks whether the GI Bill serves veterans or offers an opportunity to exploit them.
