Ohio old age pension chief Tom McCaw announced 648 new recipients were added to the aid for aged rolls in March without reducing the average monthly check. He aims to finish investigations of thousands on a waiting list. about 60 percent may qualify, with 111,985 pension checks totaling 2,524,492 dollars and an average grant of 22.54 dollars.
Seven year old Janet Green of Wilmington died in Cincinnati after a lollypop stick pierced her mouth and struck the base of her brain during a 45 mile race to the city. Fire department workers attempted life saving measures using an inhalator at a local station. She had fallen from a desk at school while holding the candy.
Del Rio Texas Dr John R Brinkley claimed 250000 in damages after Morris Fishbein article questioned his surgical abilities. A federal jury ruled he was not libeled and awarded no damages.
The State Supreme Court today upheld the right of employees to sue for damages when an occupational disease is not covered by the workmen's compensation law.
In Columbus the Senate moved to reconsider the Pollock Resolution seeking a senatorial committee to probe un Americanism in state universities and public schools. The vote 17 to 15 kept final action in doubt as Democratic and wavering Republican senators blocked an immediate decision. The Maston Bill granting rural school superintendents greater teacher-appointment authority passed unanimously in the Senate with a later amendment. the board would require only a majority to reject an appointee. The House approved the Radcliff Bill to place an education department official in charge of handicapped and delinquent training. Rep. J H McGregor of Coshocton pushed a resolution asking Congress to pay Ohio 1 338 160 withheld in October pension funds.
Hollywood star Clark Gable married Carole Lombard in Kingman Arizona. The Reverend Kenneth Engle officiated as the couple, both previously married, exchanged vows with Lombard now Mrs Lombard Gable and Gable claimed the role of husband. The bride and groom were later reported at the minister’s study in a family scene.
Columbus WPA administrator Dr. Carl Watson ordered administrative and supervisory employees to resign from any political committees or organizations involved in political management or campaigns. He required immediate posting of regulations governing political activity on all projects to comply with recent congressional limits on WPA workers.
In Pearisburg Virginia 65 year old Gertrude Boggess a practical nurse hanged herself in her jail cell Sheriff Emory Johnston said she confessed to taking valuables from the home of Mrs M E Wilson of Hoge's Store after Wilson's death last month.
George Wurzel aged 42, a pottery worker, was killed when a car hit a parked truck in East Liverpool today.
A New York jewelry salesman reported being kidnapped on U S Route 50 in Vinton County and robbed of gems worth 25 000. He said three bandits forced them to stop at gunpoint and drove for five hours before releasing them near the Union Delaware county line. Police searched for a jewel laden briefcase and the suspects.
Four state police hunted John Thornberg the so called human bomb bandit who robbed First National Bank at Chanute Kansas after threatening to blow up the building. He carried dynamite and batteries in his pocket and was photographed while an amnesia patient in a Kansas City Missouri hospital.
Nationalist troops marched across Spain to take charge in Franco's name. Columns of Republican soldiers moved to concentration camps as surrenders spread across eastern central and southern fronts. Franco ordered Falange leaders to assemble to name new Madrid and former Republican centers' heads.
Leaders of Czech and Slovak organizations in North and South America planned to meet in New York or Chicago to unify followers for a rebirth of Czechoslovakia. Bohus Benes, Eduard Benes nephew, announced the meeting would be held in about a month.
Lawrence Ruetschi a 54 year old Newark man volunteered to help a section crew clear rocks overhanging the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad tracks near his home six miles east of Newark. His pick started a rock slide that buried him for two hours and caused his death yesterday.

Detroit report says Leo Stephens aged 35 is returned to an Ohio State reformatory from which he escaped in 1925. An extradition order, approved March 3 by the late Gov. Frank Fitzgerald, followed his two months served at an honor camp in Sandusky before his 14 years of quiet residing in Detroit with a wife. Police stated a friend disclosed his identity.
In Elyria Ohio a $10 000 damage suit resumes over a Columbia Township feud from September 24. Coleman Kiss administrator of Ellen Sadle 35 sues William Schutthelm 42 who fatally shot Sadle and wounded her husband Walter 38 before killing himself. Schutthelm widow named defendant.
Vance W. Hasley aged 32 and his two year old son Merwin died in a fire at their home near Sylvania yesterday. Mrs. Mabel Hasley, 34, was burned slightly trying to enter the dwelling. Hasley reportedly was overcome by smoke when he went back inside for a third child.
Dr. Tom Douglas Spies of the University of Cincinnati, whose pellagra research aided public health, received the John Phillips Memorial Award for 1939, the American College of Physicians sole medal.
Harry Dingledine 56 and Henry Dingledine 29 are to be executed by electric chair at Ohio Penitentiary on April 19, in Ohio's first father and son death sentence. Also to die in a triple execution is Harry Chapman 37 of Chicago for the same 1937 hold up and gun battle that killed Patrolman Martin Randolph.

In Cleveland federal court Robert Boylan 24 Frederick Utes 24 of Kent and Raymond Clayborn 22 of Cuyahoga Falls pleaded guilty to forging stolen WPA checks and were sentenced to prison terms.
