U S Steel raises wages by ten percent affecting about 350000 workers nationwide as part of a wave of pay rises this week. The move would lift hourly rates toward pre 1929 levels and may boost buying power without reducing hours, a policy echoed across the industry. Toledo and Cleveland reports note strikes and picket actions as labor rows escalate.
Washington March 30 Fewer bank closings than in 13 years were reported by the bank rehabilitation system unofficial statistics show fewer than 25 small banks closed in the first months of 1934 compared with a peak of 3200 last year. Government RFC loans return deposits tied up by bank failures.
In Longview Texas fire swept the 112 room Hotel last midnight. An unidentified man’s body was recovered and two others are believed burned to death on the third floor. Many others were injured leaping from windows as flames climbed.
Columbus march 30 report from Robert Burns state supervisor of federal payroll and employment Mitney notes a general upward swing in Ohio employment. More persons are at work and travel wages are rising, with the trend appearing across the state.
The Athens County Works Division will employ about 300 men under the new program replacing the CWA after this week. Eligible men must reside in six industrial townships Trimble York Dover Waterloo Athens and Bern, with projects across the county and wages funded from a $10 800 April allotment.
NEW PHILADELPHIA March 30 The Muskingum Conservancy Flood Control Project moves toward start as district directors meet awaiting governor’s signature on state funds and emergency measures. Directors Saley Mansfield Littick Wilkin say the project has materialized and work will begin without recalling the conservancy court after prior funds were not spent.
Harold J. Rose announced his Republican bid for Athens County prosecuting attorney. He filed a petition at the election board. Rose practiced with M. D. Hughes in Athens for 15 months after 10 months in Glouster. He graduated from Staunton Military Academy Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1931. He is the son of George W. Rose and Adda Rose of Glouster and formerly served as message clerk in the Ohio General Assembly. He is a Mason Elk and Methodist Episcopal Church member.
In Athens East Side, a rabbit corpse found on Morris Avenue sparked rumors it was the Easter Bunny. The Messenger investigated and concluded it was not the Easter Bunny nor any helper, but likely a stray Peter Rabbit struck by a car near Mr. MacGregor's garden.
New York March 30 PF Messages of condolence flooded Otto H. Kahn’s Fifth Avenue home after he died of a heart attack in Kuhn Loeb & Company offices. The banker and philanthropist was regarded as an authority on economics and international affairs. Funeral arrangements were to be announced, privately held.
Seven first cousins of Mrs. Marion E. McConnell settled with the Continental Illinois National Bank trustee in Superior Court, taking $254,834 from the estate. About $200,000 more went to three other relatives, while the remaining assets go to animal welfare societies as the bulk of the $3,010,000 estate is unclaimed.
A.P. Harvey Decraft of Mt. Crab confessed to shooting his nine year old step-daughter Luella Len gross in Cincinnati. Sheriff Steve Miller said Decraft claimed the shooting was accidental but investigators found contradictions in his account.
Columbus dispatch reports State Highway Director O. W. Mertell announced four national highway recovery projects will be let on April 13. The plans cover 10 219 miles of landscaping at an estimated cost of 434 000 dollars, with one project in Vinton County.

Peters burg Indiana authorities took Ward Davis into custody as investigators probe the killing of 15 year old Annace France, a Petersburg High School junior. The victim was found in a car borrowed by her head or guardian to return home, two miles east of town.
The state relief commission revises April budgets for works division programs to boost county relief burdens. Total federal funds increase about 10000 dollars with most counties receiving small rises. nine rural counties are omitted. Columbus March 30 The Ohio Legislature resumes after a week end adjournment amid stalemated talks on sales and income taxes and related measures. Governor White urged a workable tax plan, while the Senate sent to the House the Lloyd Bill allowing public schools to participate in a $20 million RFC loan to reduce a projected $19 million debt by July 1, largely in teachers salaries.
Logan March. Under a plan seriously considered by Starr School District Board a consolidation of all schools would occur before the next fall term. L. L. Louthian of the State Department of Education recommended the step and it has impressed the board. The Diamond Laurel Run Zion Ridge Tick Ridge Starr and Co Onville schools would be abandoned with pupils sent to Union Furnace. Temporary classrooms would be needed at Union Furnace until a permanent building program is planned.
In Columbus on March 30 21 year old Maud Frazier tried to kill herself by leaping from a bridge over the Scioto River claiming her 51 year old husband forced her out of the home.
The House funded Dr. William A. Wirt of Gary Indiana to travel to Washington and testify to a committee about the Brain Trust revolution. Speaker Rainey plans to appoint a five member panel soon. Rep Foulkes received a telegram from Wirt naming sources but kept it private pending proper disclosure.
The Turkish government assured the United States it will arrest and detain Samuel Insull for extradition. The State Department announced action following a formal request through Ambassador Robert P Skinner. Detention will occur immediately after receipt of the warrant and judicial record.
About 150 Athens County high school students will compete Saturday at 8 in the Athens Junior High building. The event selects county representatives for the district state scholarship test in Athens on May 5. Each school may enter two students per subject across chemistry, physical science, physics, algebra, geometry, American history, world history, Latin, French, and English for grades nine through twelve.
Kansas City March 30 Herbert Hoover a tanned and healthy former president greeted friends and spoke freely yet refused to discuss politics or the midwestern automobile tour. He said he was riding around with his secretary Paul Sexton just visiting friends and relatives.
Washington March 30 workers won recognition on wage gains as operators and United Mine Workers representatives reached an accord covering Appalachian bituminous fields. The pact, signed by all operators except Northern West Virginia and amp s fields, may be signed by those operators before the current contracts expire April 1.
After weeks of talks, a new 60 cent a ton loader rate and multiple wage increases were agreed for miners in Ohio Pennsylvania West Virginia and Maryland plus a seven hour day six day week and $0.10 a ton for pick work. A joint commission will study wage differentials and the deal awaits NRA approval before the president’s signature.
