Mayor Day to trial Pollard pledge reform in Athens court

Mayor Day plans a temperance reform based on the Pollard pledge. In Athens a prisoner will sign a non sworn pledge to abstain from liquor for a year after a heavy fine, with escalating reporting requirements and possible return to the workhouse if violated.

Needy Families to Receive Five Dollar Relief Checks

The Relief Committee will send over a hundred five dollar checks to the most flood affected families. The cash lets recipients choose their own essential items since furniture shortages delay in kind aid. Canvassers surveyed five districts and recorded those in urgent need, noting that neighbors asked to share support.

Athens Masonic Temple to Undergo Seasonal Remodeling

By resolution the Masonic bodies authorize the board of property trustees to modernize the Athens Masonic Temple. An architect will draft plans including a single third floor lodge room with galleries, a club room library and dining hall on the second floor, and possible front modernization plus an elevator. First floor may house new business rooms. Work aims to start once F C Stedman Co vacates for a new West Athens building, likely June or July. Cornerstone laid October 10 1877 and dedication June 24 1878. Building cost $13206, now valued higher but not under $20000.

Frye and Partlow Married in Probate Office

Miss Clara Partlow and Mr. Harvey Frye wed in Probate Judge Lynch's office on Wednesday afternoon. Mayor Day officiated the ceremony. Frye works as a foreman on a Baltimore and Ohio railroad section.

Permits to Wed Reported in Local Notices

James Murray a 24 year old miner and Mrs Lucy Gaines a 20 year old of Buchtel obtain marriage licenses. Harvey Frye a 22 year old B and O foreman and Miss Clara Partlow a 18 year old of Athens are granted permits to wed.

Miners Strike at Luhrig Mines Over Clay Vein

Striking miners led by the local mine committee stop work after refusing to work through a clay vein. Mine Boss D K Nutter ordered the vein worked, triggering the stoppage and an inquiry by district officials. Sub-District President John Moore of Rendville is due today to help resolve the dispute.

Funeral of Alex Wiper Killed by Gas Explosion

The Daily Herald reports the funeral of Alex Wiper who died after a gas explosion on Sugar Creek. The 27 year old Bradwood Illinois native worked with Sunday Creek Company and is survived by his parents William and Mrs Wiper, brother William, five sisters, and other relatives. The funeral is set for Tuesday at 1 PM at the Moore farm home and the remains will be transported by boat to Zanceville for interment.
