County to End City Prisoner Confinement Agreement
Athens County commissioners discussed cancelling the city county confinement contract after Sheriff Shields gave a 60 day notice that no prisoners would be accepted after June 15. The contract pays $1.50 per day per city prisoner housed in the county jail. The sheriff cited manpower shortages and suggested the city arrange alternate confinement for female prisoners. The two commissioners planned further talks with city officials as they operate with only two members following Wayne Wiley's resignation, while a third member appointment remains pending.
