Providence March 27 U P report Elliott R Hathaway a debonair playboy suspected of strangling Verna Russell prepared for work in a shirt factory at Providence County Jail after surrendering to the Rhode Island attorney general. He was arraigned on murder charges and held without bail as officials build their case. A funeral for the nurse ensued while Hathaway’s statements were deemed false by authorities who say the crime was a plain attempted criminal assault ending in death.
Chicago report states Thom as Calabrese, 44, a lawyer's investigator and father of six, says he killed neighbor James Hill, 45, after Hill attacked his daughter Rose, 17. Calabrese followed Hill, fired three times, then surrendered to off duty Officer Leonard Burch.
A blaze starting from an overheated boiler in the basement of the American Dry Cleaning Company at 11 West State Street destroyed a large part of the Williams store and apartment building. Losses may exceed $5,000, with extensive smoke damage to garments and interiors. Firefighters fought heavy smoke to control the fire, Moore's Restaurant staff reported stock damage, and investigators will probe the cause. Building owned by Williams brothers.

A gunman held up six patrons at the Valley View Lunch Room at 11:15 p m confiscating about 60 dollars including a 2 check on Athens National Bank. The suspect fled in an abandoned 1920 Pontiac found in Parkersburg with Indiana plates.

In Mahanoy City Pennsylvania a note in Slavish language recounts a fatal duel between lifelong friends Savo Rancovich aged 42 and Recto Brankovich aged 48. After arguing they agreed to shoot it out in the woods. They faced off fired on signal and both were wounded. Rancovich died and Brankovich was hospitalized with bullet wounds to the head left side and left arm.
In Columbus on March 27 the House defeated the Goodwin Bill requiring state or local units to pay half the cost of railroad crossing signals. Opponents led by Rep. Charles H. Jones and Rep. W. W. Weir argued it would shift costs to taxpayers and relieve railroads. The defeat was 91 to 15.
Toledo public schools may stay open only if teachers work without pay and can reopen in September if the Legislature provides operating funds, prompted by a $4.5 million tax delinquency. This delinquency cuts about $600,000 from the year’s remaining school funds.
Dudley W. Wallace, wealthy York stock broker, died in Honolulu today from bullet wounds in a suicide after allegedly attacking his two sons with an axe. The incident ends a violent spree attributed to the man, prompting police investigation.
