Mardis Bill Returns to Committee for Tax Levy Review
The Mardis House Bill No. 136, to allow a three mill school levy outside the 15 mill limit without a popular vote, is back in committee and set for a hearing tonight before the House taxation panel in Athens. The State Tax Commission estimates about 1,500 of 2,000 districts have used this levy in some form. County Superintendent H. R. McVay calls repeated votes costly and advocates automatic levy passage if law. Educational supporters are expected at the hearing.
