Mexican Girl May Remain In America

In Ashland Kentucky 13 year old Mercedes Cota, brought to the United States by Jeanine Teterick, faced removal to Nogales Mexico after officials ruled she was in the country illegally. Miss Gertrude Ramey of the children's home said she will accompany Mercedes to Nogales Arizona once INS completes arrangements and will seek legal means for her return to the United States.

A self described gambler awaits lie detector tests in the strangling of Credia Mallady, a 29 year old from St. Louis now identified in Columbus. Jackie Lawson 27 who admits living with Mallady in St. Louis but says he last saw her Feb 27 was jailed after officials confirmed the body found in a creek near Columbus. Authorities say Mallady was identified by her ex husband and relatives. The plastic clothesline used in the crime was identified by the ex husband who also produced a matching dental plate.

Five Snowbound Kansans Survive On Canned Food

In Dodge City Kansas five snowbound people, four men and a woman, survived the blizzard by eating canned dog food and steamed wheat kernels. The meal, their first in 24 hours, was deemed safe for human consumption after doctors were contacted by long distance by two of the group, Orville Taylor and Norman Schaffer, who provided the report. The other three names were not released.

GALLIPOLIS Ohio The 17 year old Lloyd Hill remains in the Gallia County Jail as a Grayson County Virginia Grand Jury considers murder and robbery charges. Extradition between Ohio and Virginia was completed Saturday but custody timing for Virginia authorities to pick up Hill is not yet known.

Court Hears Arraignment in Double Slaying Case

Canton born Russell McCoy, brought from Zanesville, faces arraignment on two first degree murder charges in a separate double slaying. Judges plan to appoint Muskingum and Stark county prosecutors to decide trial venue. McCoy confessed to killing Reynold Amodio, 30, store owner, and Paul Cain, 35, clerk, during a November 30 holdup near Uniontown.

Two Ships Collide Near Falmouth Urgently Requests Aid

A 7200 ton Italian freighter Corallo and the 5055 ton Norwegian Nepal Branco collided about 50 miles southwest of Falmouth. A Brest radio from the Corallo said she was leaking badly and needed help. The Nepal Branco's owners in Oslo said the ship was not seriously damaged and would likely continue voyaging.

Life along the San Andreas Fault returns toward normal after Friday's quake. By Sunday night there were 120 aftershocks in the Bay Area.
