President Nixon denounces campus disorders as a threat to civilization and unveils limited federal action. HEW chief Finch seeks new initiatives while enforcing financial aid rules for students convicted of crimes, urging colleges to implement congress approved provisions.
In eight years of fighting the war's balance swings again as North Vietnamese regulars press from base areas while U S forces increase mobility. Diminished Viet Cong structure struggles to rebound though Communist commanders deploy smaller, more selective attacks.
Viet Cong and North Vietnamese attack Saigon on three sides as U S analysts warn of a possible peak in enemy activity around the capital. Within five miles of Saigon some 1 500 Viet Cong are believed present as U S 9th Infantry Division units fight near Ben Tre 40 miles south. In separate clashes northwest of Saigon 40 enemy killed with US losses of one dead and nine wounded.
James Earl Ray’s new attorney says Ray now asserts innocence and that he was pressured into pleading guilty to first degree murder in the King assassination. Ray had previously told Judge Baile the plea was voluntary and understanding in Memphis.
Sen. William Proxmire reports the nation's 100 top defense contractors employ 2082 retired military officers, a figure he says has tripled in ten years. He warns the trend strains public interest and increases contractor influence over the military.
Ohio corrections chief Maury C. Koblentz rejected claims by resigning prison psychologist Glenn Camp that the Ohio Penitentiary is mismanaged. He defended Warden Harold J. Cardwell as firm yet fair, noting Camp was suspended last December for misconduct. Prisoners under indictment for June and August rioting are isolated pending trial.
Ohio highway safety officials report the Traffic Safety Slogan Contest deadline is midnight March 1. Entries near 50 000. The prize includes a new car and the top license plate, awarded to the best slogan promoting traffic safety.
