Kidnaper Payne in Kanawha Jail after self harm attempt

Richard A. Payne, 23, former convict who abducted Mrs Elma Baldwin and three children, cut his arm with a razor at Kanawha County jail. He said he would not return to the penitentiary and sought release for his cellmate Burton Post. Post is serving multiple five year terms for armed robbery.

India Will Keep Hands Off Tibet

New Delhi. Prime Minister Nehru said fighting in Lhasa has subsided and India will not intervene in the Tibetan revolt against Chinese Communist rule. He noted no reliable information on the Dalai Lama’s fate and suggested he may be under house arrest. The Times of India Hong Kong correspondent reported the Dalai Lama under restraint while Peiping pressed Tibet’s military government to withdraw his support.

Widespread fires claim nine lives across three states

Fires in Dallas Texas Groton Vermont and Rockville Maryland killed nine people including four children and two mothers. Library of Congress Helps Ohio Schoolboy Pronounce Hetuck

An Ohio sixth grader, Rickey Sewell of Leavittsburg, learned the word Hetuck meaning big buckeye in Indian and its pronunciation Hee Tuck with equal stress. Rep. Robert Cook asked the Library of Congress, which after a delay traced Hetuck to Marietta Ohio in 1788 where Col Sprout led a procession to the Campus Martius court. The term grew from that scene and the buckeye tree, yielding the nickname Buckeye State.

Kidnaping Charge Prepared for Girl Escapees

Two 16 year old girls Peggy Ann Moore of Omaha and Janet Spegel of Lexington Neb will face kidnaping charges after breaking out of a Nebraska industrial school and forcing farmer Jesse Richards to drive them to safety. Four Escape Mahoning Jail

Four inmates and a woman overpowered two guards at Mahoning County jail in Youngstown early today. They kidnapped a jailer as a hostage then released him seven miles away. the escape used pistols and a car owned by a guard. One guard was locked in a cell after a head injury. a escapee threatened to shoot. Names given: Robert Herman 35 Joseph Orville 23 Donald Sweet 24 all of Youngstown and Lola Gordon of Toledo. The six story jail opened in 1957 and was believed escape proof.

Boy Kneeling in Prayer Killed in Car Crash

In Nashville Tennessee a two year old boy kneeling in prayer in the front seat was killed when a head on collision with another car occurred. Seven others were injured. The father Gordon Roberts 21 said he was driving with his wife to work during evening devotionals.
