In Columbus the House debates a Democratic backed FEPC bill to ban job discrimination with Republican opposition. Gov Lausche urged changes to win cross party support. The plan creates a five member commission, bans race color religion or national origin based discrimination, and uses courts for enforcement.
Four boys convicted of taking part in a knife fight after a Central John Marshall High School basketball game were sentenced to the Boys Industrial School at Lancaster. They were moved to another room pending reform school transfer when another juvenile inmate yelled and the four allegedly jumped him. The incident followed the post game brawl that left Kenneth Hall 18 with a stab wound.
In Lansing a man from Cleveland, Nathan Solomon, 32, was stopped leaving a downtown building with a drawer full of jewelry. He is charged with breaking and entering as police value the loot at about $6000.
Bert Carpenter and his son B E B Carpenter improve their farm five miles east of Athens. A modern poultry house rises and lumber from the farm is used for other buildings across the Hocking River. The old Halbert homestead built in 1804 features flint glass windows. A Pomeroy clipping recalls 1863 frosts that ruined fruit after early May spring. Covered bridges dot the area, including the South Bridge site from 1839 now at Millfield and the Kidwell Bridge over Sunday Creek built in 1880.
In Washington the House reversed a shelving vote on a veterans pension bill. Rankin proposed pay outs of 90 dollars monthly at 65 for World War I and II veterans, with revisions likely to favor World War I only and require financial need. Huber backed a more limited plan with possible increases for non service connected disability benefits.

DAYTON Ohio A 24 year old Navy veteran wanted by Columbus police for questioning in the Mona McBride knife slaying was committed to Dayton State Hospital. Judge Rodney Love said the Athens County resident voluntarily entered the VA hospital in Dayton last fall for treatment. Franklin Burns has been a patient at the Dayton VA Hospital for six months and no warrant has been issued for his arrest. Columbus police said they were prevented from questioning Burns because of his illness.
State Welfare Director John H. Lamneck said a survey found many Ohio wards housed in antiquated structures over 100 years old. Patchwork repairs keep them in use. listings include Gallipolis State Institute superintendent residence from 1831 and main buildings at Columbus and Athens State Hospitals built before 1900.
A baby girl wrapped in blankets was left on the Pry couple’s doorstep in Springfield, the second such incident in a month. The infant was found Tuesday night and taken to City Hospital.
A first degree murder indictment is returned against Claude Ramsey, 39, an escapee from Gallipolis State Institute, for the knife slaying of Esther Mason Seibert, 28, in a Columbus hotel on February 19.

About 2500 miners and railroad workers in Corning area idle due to a two week coal shutdown. New York Central diesel engines used in coal traffic between Corning and Bucyrus were sent to Toledo to await termination of the United Mine Workers stoppage ordered by John L. Lewis.
In Newark court three defendants describe Edwin Hart being beaten outside a cafe on January 13. Mrs Maxine Dermer Sullivan her brother Clarence Dermer and Albert Hefley face first degree murder charges. Sullivan testified Hart grabbed her and Hefley hit Hart then kicked him. Hefley admitted striking and kicking Hart. Clarence Dermer corroborated Sullivan’s account.
Robert Ira Robey aged 38 of Newark fell thirty feet from a tree he was trimming northeast of Circleville and died yesterday at the scene.
Ohio Senate Democrats passed the unemployment compensation bill by 18 to 12 with Republican help while opposing a 30 percent liquor license fee increase. The measure redefines eligibility and benefit levels, and the debate included a heart attack scare for Sen. Tom W. Jones.
Ohio conservation figure Louis Bromfield argues the amended bill grants the governor removal powers and could raise costs with diminishing results. Gilbert E. Condo also criticizes the plan, urging a director be named by an advisory commission under a new department uniting conservation activities.

The Lancaster Eagles Lodge liquor permit was suspended until July 22 on gambling device charges. State officials confiscated six slot machines January 2. hearing on the charge followed with a voluntary statement by publisher Kenneth Kerr. The board also suspended several other permits, including Moose Lodge in Crooksville for unlawful possession of intoxicants and 3.2 beer permit.
A slate fall at a small Carbon Hill mine near Fruit Dale Hollow injured Jesse Conley 46 of Carbon Hill. He suffered a broken back and crushed right foot and was taken to Hocking Valley Hospital Logan. About a ton of slate collapsed while he worked with William Blair. eight of Conley’s nine children live at home. The mine had been abandoned previously.
Sheriff Ralph R. Millikin announced the capture of the last of four men who escaped from the Trumbull County jail in January. Denver police informed him they arrested John Novak, 41, of Cleveland, an escapee from Colorado State Prison. Three others jailed with Novak for questioning in the holdup were recaptured within two days.
Watt Brown aged 22 of Mineral Ridge endures 18 days on water only at Jesus Name Pentecostal Church and reports feeling pretty good. He has shed about 10 pounds and declined to reveal his reasons while church officials note prior faster attempts, the longest being seven days.
Columbus report says the liquor department ordered a crackdown on bookmaking at drinking spots in the Cincinnati area. Anthony A. Rutkowski, enforcement chief, called it illegal commerce and vowed no relaxation in actions against the vice activity.
