A letter from Southern Ohio coal operators invites United Mine Workers District No. 6 leaders to a March 27 conference at the Deshler Hotel in Columbus to negotiate a new wage scale effective April 1 1922. Operators insist the check off not be discussed.
On the eve of a miners strike in Charleston West Virginia the United Mine Workers district 17 convention approved the scale committee report proposing a six hour day a five day week and retention of the current wage scale despite a few negative votes.
Washington reports a potential 600,000 miner strike on April 1. Attorney General Daugherty said federal action could be used to prevent production interference. Government expects a short disruption with stockpiles sufficient. investigations by the Justice Department influence possible measures. Coal fields in West Virginia and other nonunionized states race to meet extraordinary demand as output rises.
A 72 year old trapper Mrs Joseph Sears died in Algonac after hours of agony when a muskrat trap trapped her in two feet of mud and ice water. A tipped boat she used to bait the trap left and she fought to free herself biting off her wrist. The coroner ruled death from cold and exposure.
World War veterans with government claims including compensation vocational training and hospitalization may discuss their claims with C. W. Kittner representative of the U S Veterans Bureau at Hotel Berry all day Thursday.
The state supreme court affirmed the conviction of William Rowland of Chester Hill Morgan County for conducting a dance without a permit and ruled a mayor may refuse without stating a reason. The decision clarifies permit denial standards for village officials.
Mrs Anna Penrod age 59 attended her first movie Tuesday night at the Majestic. She has ridden railroad cars but rarely in an automobile until two years ago and is of Irish descent. Married three times, she is mother of nine children, two by the first husband, three by the second and four by the third. Louis Penrod, living, has one child from each set of offspring. two of her grandchildren are deceased. Mrs Penrod resides on Mound Street.
Wheeling reports Alexander Howat, former Kansas Mine Workers president, foresees a strike by coal miners on April 1. He says no chance of a joint conference with operators and rejects wage cuts as miners and families face hardship. He returns to Kansas to pursue reinstatement and jokes about jail.
Attorney E A Tinker 56 former Chilli tako the state utilities commission died suddenly at his Columbus home from heart trouble after an attack at his office the previous day He was appointed to the commission by Governor Davis in February of last year.
Mr. Tinker, born in Jacksonville and longtime Ohio University graduate of 1898, built a respected law career in Chillicothe and once represented Ross County in the legislature. His death removes a staunch friend of Athens County and the university, where he had supported the chamber and commission work.
President Harding urged Congress to appropriate funds to maintain an 18 battleship fleet with all auxiliaries. The White House spokesman indicated the force must be kept in commission with full manning, requiring about 200 officers and a capable enlisted corps.
Columbus March 22. Ohio United Mine Workers President Lee Hall refused a request for himself and his representatives to meet Deshler Hotel representatives of operators and miners from Hocking, Pomeroy, Jackson and Crooksville districts to negotiate a wage scale and conditions effective April 1. He cited district No. 6 responsibilities and stated inability to attend the proposed central competitive field meeting.
William Green secretary treasurer of the United Mine Workers says there is no prospect of settlement before the nationwide walkout of half a million coal workers April 1. He spoke after reading a Washington dispatch that cabinet officers hoped for an agreement beforehand.
About 1300 students at Ohio University left campus after a Wednesday morning bell for a week long break. A special Hocking Valley train carried many homeward students from Athens to Columbus at 10 45. The mid semester vacation came earlier than usual with no reason given.

In Huntington West Virginia on March 22 Owen Boster sought help from spirit medium O G Gilbert of Ashland Kentucky. Gilbert demanded cash saying spirits would reveal fortunes. Boster presented $2000 then more, bag held $8000, but the bag emptied while he stood at a bank. Police seek Gilbert as a swindler.
Special dty enforce ment officers with Magistrate Pearl Helwig netted two more prohibition violators Tuesday night. Ira Jones and Walter Andryvich pleaded guilty to possession and manufacturing liquor charges, were fined 500 dollars plus costs, and will be sent to the Dayton workhouse for nonpayment. Bert Shepard pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and drunkenness, receiving 50 and 5 dollar fines plus costs. he denied past pastorate at Mechanicsburg churches and explained toilet-water drinking claim.
Detroit arrest of John Seidel 36 of Cincinnati exposes him as alleged leader of a bandit gang. The gang reportedly stole a Nash Tailoring Company payroll worth 8000 dollars, prompting sensational developments and further police action.
Highlights from Ohio history list arrivals and deaths. The first Shakers reached Turtle Creek in Warren County in 1805. Other items note births and deaths of prominent figures such as Jeremiah Morrow and Stanley Matthews, plus a 1866 fire at Pike's Opera House in Cincinnati.
In Morocco two hundred Moors were killed and 300 wounded in a battle with Spanish troops near Alhucemas. A Spanish warship shelled Morish positions on the coast as the fight continued.

The house rules committee gave formal approval to Fordney’s plan to bring the soldier bonus bill to the floor tomorrow after four hours of debate without amendments. The house will convene at 11 o'clock to act on the measure.
August Arch Probst, a Swiss butler once with the Rolling Rock club near Pittsburg, remains at Ellis Island awaiting Federal Judge Knox's ruling on bail. His attorney Bernard H. Sandler claimed Probst was kidnapped after a truth exchange with Virginia Craigie McKay, daughter of a Pittsburg family, and was confined in the psychopathic ward. Judge Knox ordered Probst be given comfortable quarters on the island pending the decision.
The Clinton Castle Knights of the Golden Eagle No. 153 of Glouster petitioned Athens county common pleas court for 500 damages against Isaac N. Steadman Roland B. Smith and David Harris. They say the third floor of a building on Inlet 159 was leased in 1912 with an agreement to keep the outside stairway in repair, but for 18 months the stairway has been too badly worn to use, and the defendants have refused to repair it.
In Cleveland the Democratic Executive Committee plans to name Newton D. Baker as directing head and surface talk of Baker's gubernatorial bid. Col Carmi A Thompson's candidacy announcement is awaited, with a possible push to back Judge Hugh L Nichols from Batavia if Thompson secures the Republican nomination.
The Public Hall costing 6.3 million dollars will open April 15. The main auditorium seats 11,900.
