A dramatic scene describes a prisoner in Palmetto as rebels jeer and a mid shower of balls tests his resolve. He falls to a sabre stroke, his wounded body carried away by traitors to a damp prison cell shut from light.
In a Continental Monthly tale, three black leather bags go to Philadelphia with a newly married couple. A spoons theft scare leads to arrest at a hotel then a naval duel misfire resolves after officials propose peace. The scene closes with a pistol hunt and light humor.
In Camden a staged duel fails when the pistols are missing and the valise contains a night cap and grooming items. The principals, Captain and Doctor, learn the mix up as they fear an audience and mockery. The scene collapses with laughter and disbelief.
A merry river crossing ends at the Continental with a mistaken valise exchange. A bride and groom, a captain, burglars, a police officer, and a doctor witness a comic scene when a thief shoots a pistol through the valise, injuring his leg. The tale ends with new bonds and a plan to mark the day in white on their bags.
The Mobile Register reports information that the enemy has struck tents on Santa Rosa Island, signaling a move against the South. It asserts readiness to defend Mobile, uniting men, women, and children in defense against the threat.
A 74th Ohio Regiment correspondent from Athens describes marching to Camp Lowe, Capitol review by Gov. Tod and Adjutant General Buckingham, and guarding Confederate prisoners including 1,800 captives from Fort Donelson. He notes diverse prison camp demographics, the lethargy of death, and praises Col. Moody for humane treatment as the unit fields with the 69th and 50th regiments and cavalry nearby.
The Associated Banks of New York, in a general meeting, recognize United States notes as the currency for daily interbank exchanges through the Clearing House. They will deposit notes with the Government Sub-Treasury at five percent interest, up to 20 million dollars, to be used in daily settlements. The action aims to reassure markets before Legal Tender notes are issued.
Washington March 11 The Intelligencer publishes the President's General War Orders No 1 2 and 3 outlining mobilization and reorganization of Union forces including the Potomac Army divisions into four corps under McDowell Sumner Heintzelman and Keys with Banks forming a fifth corps and Halleck to command the Mississippi Department.
The Painsville Telegraph reports William H. Andrews, a 50 year old man from La Grange Lorain County Ohio, who left home December 8 and was last seen January 17 on the Lake Shore Road between Painsville and Erie traveling east. He is described as six feet tall with gray streaked dark hair blue eyes a high forehead a large nose and a ring on the left hand. He wore gray pants a gray sack overcoat and a dark green cloth coat with velvet collar. The public is asked to help locate him for an afflicted family.
The Memphis Appeal correspondent recalls the Moniteur ironies on Napoleon’s Elba return and applies a similar anxious tone to Richmond’s view of McClellan. He notes fear and talk of an emperor figure, with names and places cited to mirror revolutionary headlines.
