Former Egyptian monarch Farouk I collapsed in a Rome restaurant and died en route to San Camillo hospital. He ruled for 15 years during poverty and upheaval, faced revolution, abdicated, and fled with his infant son Fuad II.
Soviet Tass reports Lt. Col. Alexei Leonov left the Voskhod 2 capsule for about five meters during orbit, connected by a cable, then returned. Col. Pavel Belyayev remained aboard as the crew conducted outside observations during the first orbital pass and transmitted footage to Earth.
The House begins hearings on a strong voting rights bill less than a day after President Johnson sent it to Capitol Hill. Attorney General Katzenbach will testify, as lawmakers push rapid action amid Alabama events and bipartisan backing from leaders.
The House Ways and Means Committee may begin decisive votes on a 250 page health bill covering all Americans 65 and older with a universal hospitalization plan of 60 days in hospital and 20 in nursing homes. An optional supplemental plan would offer doctor visits and drugs for $3 monthly with government matching, plus 20 percent patient cost sharing. The Kerr Mills expansion would raise federal contributions, and financing would rely on payroll tax increases and Treasury funding with possible subsidy reductions for wealthier seniors.
U S Division engineer recommends a flood control project for Athens costing about 7.1 million dollars. Congressman Walter Moeller says final reviews in Washington will occur within months and will seek priority with President Johnson. He notes floods will be a thing of the past once built.

Dr Samuel Gerber Cuya hoga coroner was preparing a medical examiner's report as Mrs Russell testified after Lt Col Henry Sand man, Cincinnati chief of detectives.
