An early pre-dawn fire in Wilkesville destroyed the home of George Riley and Mrs. Leanna Hartley along with the Long General Store and Knights of Pythias Hall. Mrs. Riley was rescued from a porch roof by Jerry Fain who heard her screams as flames spread leaving an estimated $40,000 in losses. Fire departments from six towns battled high winds and limited water supply, saving the Raymond Long residence and a nearby service station.
