Explaining the Ross Lockridge Tragedy and Publishing Finances
Jay Franklin argues that publisher contracts and heavy taxes could leave a successful author with little after years of effort. He suggests the 33 year old author of Raintree County may have faced financial strain despite Book of the Month Club sales and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer rights. He notes publisher and agent cuts plus a 65 percent tax bite could reduce earnings to about 30 000, potentially contributing to a fatal decision.
