Middleport River Days Remembered by Francis H Alein

Francis H. Alein recalls Middleport Ohio as a river village of the Gilded Age. He narrates family ties to river engineering captains and dock owners, locals who built boats, ferries like the Acorn and Lizzie, and famed river pilots such as Will Rumsey and Major John B Downing. He notes institutions and shops along the riverfront, and laments modern changes to old steamers while nostalgic for the bygone era of ice-lined harbors and showboat calliopes. He seeks readers’ aid to identify the Sons and Daughters of Rivermen chapter in Marietta.
