Heavy fighting erupts at four points northwest of Saigon while Viet Cong shells more than 60 allied bases and Hue. U S officers label it the third phase of the spring offensive begun Feb 23 and warn a critical period persists through Saturday. Saigon remains the VC’s main objective as four divisions mass near the city.
Reports describe 60 bases shelled around Saigon from the west to northeast as regional forces gravitate from the south and east toward the capital military district. Analysts warn subregional units may spearhead an attack while divisions maneuver. U.S. forces claim 120 North Vietnamese troops killed in Tay Ninh Province amid rocket fire.
Reports detail U S ground casualties of five killed and twenty wounded at a base 53 miles northwest of Saigon as North Vietnamese forces from the 1st Division attack Landing Zone Grant aided by 120 mm mortars.
