Pasture Productivity for Pigs Outlined by OSU Specialist

Herbert M. Barnes of Ohio State University told 167 farmers at Mechanicsburg School that one acre of good pasture can yield 1000 pounds of live pork per season. He favored legumes like Ladino clover alfalfa and red clover, with a mix of all three optimal. He noted pasture cuts grain costs by 15 and supplements by 25, advised higher protein for young pigs then 10 percent during fattening, and detailed mineral mixes. Barnes urged choosing gilts with growth potential, described bedding needs, and said the region suits cattle and sheep more than hogs. The next farm talk will cover home poultry flock management on March 15.
