Marines Land to Bolster Da Nang Air Base Defenses

U S Marines arrived in South Vietnam by sea and air to reinforce Da Nang air base against Viet Cong attacks. About 1400 Marines came ashore from four 7th Fleet transports off the coast, with a second battalion aboard C130 transports from Okinawa. In all, around 3500 Marines from the 3rd Marine Division were expected by Tuesday night, including a helicopter squadron, while 1200 Marines already manned Hawk missiles at Da Nang.

Marines Hit Da Nang Beach In Viet War Landing

Marines moved ashore ten miles west of Da Nang securing a beachhead then occupied an air base. A C130 was hit by a sniper near landing approach but landed safely. Brig Gen Frederick Karch described a defensive role while two Vietnamese battalions joined to meet any attack.
