Athens County court hears first degree murder case against Harrison Hart for Crippen shooting. Key witness Jim Brandeberry offers two conflicting narratives on Hart’s confrontation with Crippen as defense and prosecution clash over evidence and prior relations.
Oral Daugherty Nelsonville superintendent of labor for the Sunday Creek Coal Company says miners in the Hocking and Sunday Creek Valleys strike for union recognition and are making a goat of the district by their actions.
In a public statement Daugherty criticizes the coal strike in the Hocking district while noting price declines and urging consideration of markets in Cambridge and Eastern Ohio. He questions union policy and alleges motives to hurt local operations, citing per tonnage rates in other fields and ongoing production as evidence. (Continued on Page 3.)
The Soldiers' Bonus Division in Columbus reports the Ohio state bonus appropriation is exhausted and no further payments can be made until a new appropriation is approved. Athens County Red Cross, led by Miss Pearl ch, has submitted applications for 27 county men eligible for the bonus. some have already received payments, but others cannot be paid until January 1933 when the legislature reconvenes and authorizes new funds.
Mrs. C L Henry learns of the death of her cousin William Bozeman a retired Cincinnati cigar manufacturer in Cambridge Massachusetts February 24 He with a brother ran a cigar factory in Athens after the Civil War then moved to Cincinnati in the early 1880s The factory was located on South Court in Cincinnati.
A severe storm battered Hopewell county with wind rain and snow all Monday. In the Lindbergh home relief and real hope arrived for the first time, marking definite news amidst the turmoil.
A second public statement signed by Colonel Lindbergh and his wife says a message has been received and that the child is safe. Authorities note the parents advise kidnappers to deal directly or through intermediaries acceptable to them, with a possible return within forty eight hours.
The signed announcement by Colonel Lindbergh and his wife states they authorize Salvatore Spitale and Irving Bitz to act as go-betweens if kidnappers avoid direct contact. The two men, known in New York crime circles, are nicknamed Salvy and widely connected with the underworld.

A Portsmouth Ohio blaze at the Bissell Furniture Store destroyed a two story building with about 200000 in damage. Two firemen Virgil Ross of New Boston and David Kehoe of Portsmouth were believed buried and dead at 3 50 am, while Assistant Fire Chief R L Shumate and two others were rescued and hospitalized in serious condition.
Dr. A H Whitacre of Chesterhill Ohio buys the Hoon property on Main Street and the adjoining Berry property and plans to tear down the Hoon site while extensively remodeling the Berry property.
Arch F Kaisely 54, former chamber dealer, accused of shooting his wife in the Union Bank Building lobby on January 13, will be brought back to Warren from Lima State Hospital for the Insane where physicians have declared him sane.
A petition by Hugh K. Martin of Arlington seeks the Republican nomination for a county office in Ohio. The filing names Martin as the man-at-large and chief commander in the Arete bea in Ohio.
Massillon Ohio March 8 Mayor General Jacob S Coxey paid a fine after police enforcing a nighttime parking rule found his car without lights. The incident stemmed from a city order requiring lights on parked vehicles. Coxey settled the fine without appeal.
Detroit march event details a riot by unemployed workers at the River Rouge Ford plant. Four killed and 22 injured as police and rioters clash with tear gas and bullets. Mary Gossman leads the mob, shouting defiant slogans. National Guard mobilized. 15 alleged mob leaders arrested. Communists blamed for planning the disturbance.
Last week’s onslaught of freezing weather continued with no relief as thermometers failed to rise above 27 degrees. Night lows dropped to 13 degrees, then only climbed to 18 degrees in the morning. The proposal would raise the gasoline tax to six cents a gallon, expand the graduated sales tax targeting chain stores, and hike fees on filing chattel mortgages and stock transfers.

Russell Holderman of the Donald Woodward Flying Service began a flight from Leroy airport to deliver food to about 25 passengers trapped on two buses blocked by snow drifts near Batavia. The group and drivers had been without meals since yesterday, authorities reported.

Hal W. Murphy of Cincinnati government offices is in Sheltering Arms Hospital in serious condition. He came to his home at 108 East State Street Saturday and was taken ill Sunday, then moved to the hospital Monday morning.

Pomeroy Chester Highway Route 7 to receive 2.4 miles of concrete pavement costing 55000 dollars from cross road east of Pomeroy to Five Points, 20 feet wide except 1200 feet through Pomeroy at 27 feet with raised curbs and concrete sidewalk on one side.
Louis Fine, 50, former Philadelphia real estate dealer, arrested in Atlantic City for the murder of Mrs. Mattie Schaaf 51 of Atlantic City. The body was found jammed in a rooming house trunk and shipped from Atlantic City shortly after she vanished a week ago.
