Area firefighters practice live burn drill in Athens

Sixty firefighters from ten area departments including Athens The Plains York Two Albany Jacksonville Amesville Chaunncey-Dover Coober Rome Two and Madison Jefferson trained in a controlled burn off East State Street Athens. The building slated for demolition provided a safe setting for search and rescue pump and ladder evolutions and allowed crews to sharpen skills after the Carriage Hill Apartments fire. Chief Jeremy Snedden called the session a success and noted it contributes to ongoing required training hours.

Athens County 4-H celebrates 100th year at kickoff event

Athens County 4-H marks a century in 2017 at a kickoff event in the Junior Fair building on the Athens County Fair grounds. About 100 people attended a two hour gathering featuring animal displays, crafts, archery demos, and still projects highlighting dog shows nutrition and shirt making. Bridget Moore noted strong membership around 650 participants in 40 clubs while stressing 4-H offers diverse learning beyond farming.

Passion for pizza drives Brock Hogue’s Little Italy legacy

Brock Hogue bought Little Italy in Glouster on July 1, 1997 after growing up in a family of pizzeria workers and dedicating years to his craft. He and wife Beth split weekday hours between Glouster and Nelsonville locations, prioritizing family time and fresh daily offerings. The Hogues describe their shop as a family, with employees treated like kin, and emphasize handmade thin crust, hand tossed, and pan dough, plus wings and fresh burgers.
