Ideal Giant Trautwein Leads Wittenberg Triumph In Final Denison Fight
In 1920 against Denison, the 6 foot 3, 200 plus pound William J. Trautwein of Springfield, star athlete at Wittenberg, shouted to ignore signals and lead a retreating drive that culminated in the only touchdown as Trautwein powered through the line for victory. The moment defined his legacy as a dominant multi sport figure who became an assistant coach and later rose to Ohio University.
