Protracted meeting and concert mark New England week
In New England a protracted meeting opened at the Presbyterian church with Rev. Dickey leading. George Townsend and the Hill Brothers sold their threshing machine and saw mill to Will Coleman and the McWhorter Brothers. Prof. James Calhoun of New Lexington taught singing at New England and Sand Rock, with rapid progress. A joint school concert at the Presbyterian church drew praise and hints of a repeat in a few weeks.

Broadwell Hamilton Fisk visited Marietta on business last week. Rev Warren Munn preaches there every three weeks. Peter Caldwell and wife visited friends at Stewart on Sunday. The select school in the G A R hall lower room is progressing under Etta Ogg. A union Sabbath school has formed at the Universalist church with a 10 o clock start. The season closed with an ice cream supper at M P Totman’s Saturday evening hosted by Inez Totman and Lella James for a small circle of friends.

Phonograph show benefits state hospital patients in Athens
Prof Wheelwright of Columbus gave a phonographic entertainment at the State Hospital last Thursday, entertaining patients and staff. He noted his Edison lineage and patented improvements, demonstrated transmitting and receiving power, and performed music from Gilmore’s band and the U S Marine Band, including Nearer My God to Thee.

Samuel Dana Horton died in Washington on Saturday February 23 from Brights disease. Son of former congressman W B Horton of Pomeroy, Horton was Harvard educated lawyer turned monetary expert and author on bimetallism. He advised at Paris Berlin conferences under Hayes Garfield Harrison and spent recent years in England writing on bimetallism before returning to Washington last October. Interred in Pomeroy after burial on Wednesday. Also notes poles bearing bills and ads on decline to council to ban such postings.
