H. L. Mencken argues the farm is the real center of corruption, not urban centers. He questions Mayor Walker’s fitness and warns reformers’ heavy tactics corrupt police and foster alliances.
A $5,000 damage suit filed in Common Pleas Court alleges Florin do Luccioni, Cleveland restaurant proprietor and grand opera company treasurer, attacked Dominic Bartono in Mahoning County Jail on February 6, fracturing three ribs. Luccioni, in jail on a six month federal liquor sentence, denies the accusation, saying the incident arose from a playful rib tickling.
John M Burr a Columbus auditor and federal income deputy tax collector will be in Athens Saturday to assist residents with income tax reports. He will operate from an office on the second floor of the Athens Post Office Building. Burr says income tax work requires professional accounting study to avoid confusion and complication. The Internal Revenue Department has long sent experts into southeastern Ohio to help prepare returns.
Beverly Hills notes Will Rogers quips about using the last budget to avoid a new session. The piece jokes that Einstein left for Germany, and Rogers laments his absence in California amid social banquets and publicity appearances.

Twenty four veterans lie in Sawtelle Hospital near death from a deadly alcoholic ginger called Jake as Hoover vetoes the Muscle Shoals Bill and Congress drifts. Page continued.
George Lawrence, 80, disappeared from his daughter Grace Goldsberry’s home on 28 Brown Avenue at 6 pm Thursday. Last seen on State Route 31 near Chauncey after boarding a Sugar Creek bus. He wears a light overcoat, brown shoes, dark gray suit, and a dark brown felt hat. He is 5 ft 6 in, 160 lb, with a paralysis stroke in December and intermittent mental illness since.
Three of four men who robbed Echo Dairy on Feb 17 returned and held 14 workers at gunpoint while taking $20. Earlier they warned owner Ben Stern they would be back, and today the threat was fulfilled as Stern and helpers were interrupted during truck loading.

Snow and sleet add to misery while waves wreck break waters and wharves. Lighthouse keeper Ben Henneberry was rescued after being washed out to sea while trying to save his boat.
Bernard Baruch prepared to outline ideas before the War Policy Commission to minimize profits and balance burdens of war. Veterans groups urged a universal draft and government control over labor, capital, prices, and production during wartime.
George Summers of Pomeroy entered Luhrig Collieries mine office and demanded payroll placement. When denied he drew a revolver and menaced staff for about 30 minutes until a scale weight struck him in the face. He fled, was chased and arrested. Summers pleads not guilty to carrying concealed weapons and is bound over to court on $300 bond.
Chicago police officer Frank McNamara on duty along Michigan Avenue witnessed two women shouting and slapping themselves after issuing a "dirty look." He spotted Beardsley Sperry in a second story window reloading a spring gun used to pepper pedestrians with buckshot.
Construction of 32 bombing planes for the U S Navy started at the Great Lakes Aircraft Corporation plant in Cleveland. The project costs exceed 1 million dollars and an extra 50 workers were assigned to the order.
The Messenger classifieds advertise 20 pounds of free feed with every 100 chicks purchased. A 40 acre farm in Waterloo Township on Improved Road is for rent. London reports the Gandhi Irwin agreement ending the Civil Disobedience campaign marks a shift to an all Indian federation under British safeguards. Elizabeth Lipsak 45 died at Lake Memorial Hospital after being shot by estranged husband John Lipsak 44 as she entered St Anthony's Church in Fairport Ohio. He killed himself 15 minutes later, later found by his son Steve 22 in a basement. More than 150 worshipers were at the church when the shooting occurred.
Cleveland March 6 Two men seen Feb 3 trying to aid an intoxicated or unconscious man into the apartment where former Councilman William E. Potter was murdered are being sought by County Prosecutor Ray T. Miller. The man is believed to be Potter, whose body was found five days later.
Edward Evans was fined 100 dollars and costs by Magistrate Carl H. Porter for possession of intoxicating liquor. James Collins faced a similar charge, received the same fine, and was committed to Athens County Jail in default of payment.
A. M. Renick of Chillicothe and R. H. Jackson of Nelsonville were appointed receivers for the Athena Brick Corporation by Judge J. W. Darby in Athens County Common Pleas Court. The Bank of Athena contest was rejected after a court discussion. The firm will operate under receivership while a financial reorganization is planned. Co. M. Gill of Athens was also named receiver for the C. L. McMillan and Son General Store at The Plains on a petition by F. J. Beasley Milling and Grocery Company.
Kansas City Missouri March 6 The jury in the trial of Mrs Myrtle Bennett charged with murdering her husband John G Bennett after a bridge game remained deadlocked at noon. The twelve jurors resumed deliberations at 9 am with no sign of a verdict while Mrs Bennett and her defense attorney James A Reed observed closely.
The proposed RCA ITT merger is abandoned after two years of congressional opposition. Gen James G Harbord and Sosthenes Behn say continued congressional refusal ended plans. Had it passed, the deal would have formed a dominant radio and communications group rivaling Britain.
New York Central Railroad Company as lessee of the Toledo and Ohio Central Railways petitions the Public Utilities Commission to discontinue passenger train service between Toledo and Thurston Fairfield County. A hearing date is set for April 23.
George Denune, 20, of Columbus, and an automobile with 71 gallons were captured by federal prohibition officers after a chase near Mount Vernon Ohio. Denune was said to have been with Hoyt Eakins from Columbus the night Eakins was killed near Hayesville. Denune drove the same car used the night of the slaying.
P H Willeke of Trimble Township bound over to Athens County Common Pleas on 500 bond after magistrate Porter found probable cause on charges of defrauding by purchasing merchandise on unsound credit. Beasley of Athens filed the affidavit leading to the arrest.
Columbus March 6 The Senate Judiciary Committee killed the Marshall Resolution to ask Congress to call a national constitutional convention for prohibition repeal. The House Federal Relations Committee considered a similar measure by Rep. Allen N. Corlett but history suggests its quick defeat. Voters may still decide by initiative petition. no definite action yet. The session adjourned after approving some bills and killing others including the Daniels and Roberts measures.
The Ohio Conservation Council approved a $10,000 purchase of the Blue Hole spring at Castalia to secure 12 acres with option on 240 more for a trout hatchery. It urged federal buying of 22,000 acres near Sandusky for a waterfowl refuge and recommended transferring the Nature Guardian Club work to the Department of Education pending financing.
Crude oil prices in the Central West Field fell 26 to 42 percent across six grades. The Ohio Oil Company announced the slump, blaming over-production after similar cuts by Mid-Continent in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas.
VALPARAISO Ind March 6 Two stories before the jury in Judge Grant Crumpacker’s court about Virgil Kirkland and the death of his sweetheart Arlene Draves at a drinking party. One says brutal attacks by Kirkland and four youths. the other says accidental death from a fall after drinking. Kirkland planned to testify about Arlene’s consent and parties they attended.
Findlay Ohio March 6 Fred Baker a 33 year old Toledo man is the sole survivor of three alleged robbers who tried to loot a wholesale grocery here Tuesday night Parkersburg West Virginia authorities believe he may be the man who robbed the Parkersburg post office Police Chief Frank Grant said fingerprints are being sent to Parkersburg to determine if Baker will be taken there for trial
Walter Ralls, a Black man, seeks a new trial after his murder conviction of Sheriff George Davenport. The death sentence is mandatory. Davenport arrested the Ralls trio after a chicken theft report on January 3, three suspects including Walter, his brother Elijah, and nephew Blanton Ralls.
In Columbus on March 6, legislators debate using a calendar committee to suppress bills from committees. Senate has 40 bills, House fewer. Democrats push for an eight member panel, evenly split. Republicans favor four Republicans and three Democrats. A Republican caucus may shape which bills advance or die.
Washington March 6 The American Federation of Labor says the country is near the bottom of a low mood with some trade indicators turning upward. The survey notes no general upturn yet but predicts revival may begin with spring activity or be delayed for months. Unemployment rise appears checked though wage cuts occurred.
A runaway truck hauling automobile bodies crashed into Ora Jackson a Steubenville butcher killing him and seriously injuring two others. The truck ran out of control on Hill Street in the downtown district smashing into a concrete safety zone at the hill base and crushing a smaller car.
Bandits robbed the Georgetown bank today taking $500. Earl Schatzman cashier and Richey assistant cashier were assaulted as the pair fled after firing two shots, both non fatal. Police noted a license plate number for the getaway car.
Yesterday's highs ranged from 76 in Abilene to 74 in San Antonio with temperatures dropping below freezing in northern regions. Forecast indicates continued cold across the far north with low pressure persisting.
