In Saigon today a daylight attack near the U S Embassy failed to kill South Vietnam Premier Tran Van Huong. Security guards halted the raid. one attacker wounded, four Viet Cong captured, another suspect detained. Huong returned to work hours later as authorities described the plot as well planned.
In the first U S spaceship transfer Americans James A McDivitt and Russell L Schweickart moved from the Apollo 9 command ship to a lunar module and beamed a cabin view to earth The pair reported all systems working well Schweickart overcame an upset stomach during the tunnel transfer and later waved home as they prepared for a series of LEM tests with rendezvous and docking on the schedule A see I call it safe and fine was the ground control assessment ahead of manned space walk and further lunar operations
President Nixon, noting a doubled U.S. casualty rate since the current offensive began, said attacks cannot be tolerated and will prompt an appropriate response. He floated options including resuming bombing of North Vietnam while U.S. casualties and peace talks in Paris shape policy.
Sirhan Sirhan testified that learning Kennedy supported Israel sparked his anger and ended his affection for the senator. He recalled watching a May 18 documentary and admitting thoughts of killing Kennedy and even Johnson. The defense cites Sirhan’s childhood war memories as crimping his mind.
In West Berlin Gustav Heinemann 69, socialist candidate, received 514 votes vs 499 for Gerhard Schroeder 58, on the first ballot of the Federal Assembly. Six electors abstained two votes invalid and 15 absent due to illness or other reasons. East Germans closed the autobahn to West Berlin for the fourth time in five days, reopening after three hours amid troop maneuvers.
Pennsylvania Governor Shafer reported to the Senate that President Nixon intends to continue the Appalachian Regional Commission. Governors of 13 states back the program and want it extended, including the highway-building phase through 1973, with a direct presidential line on welfare matters for 17 million Americans.
Officials report the music program at Athens Middle School is going well. The page notes and other items on pages 4 5 and 18 reference the death penalty not to be sought in a Racine murder trial and the Hocking County Commissioners hearing an outline of the county numbering system.
The Senate is set to receive an administrative bill to broaden the governor’s power by placing the State Planning Office under his control. Sen. Ralph S. Regula notes the plan would coordinate voices from all state departments and local governments as part of a long range state plan.
A National Airlines Boeing 727 with 27 aboard was hijacked and diverted to Cuba by a masked man armed with a .38 pistol. The flight, from New York to Miami, changed course south of Norfolk, Virginia, carrying six crew members and 20 passengers plus a supervisory employee. The hijacker remains at large.
