Law may compel Harriman to reveal Condon loyalty records

The House un American Activities Committee may seek a law to force Secretary Harriman to surrender Edward Condon loyalty files. Tugboat Sinks Mississippi River. Dozens Feared Dead

Fourteen to twenty crewmen are reported dead or missing after the 180 foot Natchez towed sank near Greenville Mississippi when a swift current swept it against a bridge piling. The Sohio Latonia rescued eleven survivors. Capt William A Howell said most of the deck crew were saved while the Natchez master Capt John Browinski was missing. The Natchez owned by Federal Barge Lines and chartered to Standard Oil.

Reports say Guatemalan forces and British troops moved to the border amid a dispute over Belize. Col Alejandro Maldonado pledged to investigate claims of 1500 British troops with field artillery along the frontier. Britain had sent two cruisers to Belize. one cruiser has departed.

A five alarm fire tore through a two story Arco Co paint plant on Cleveland's east side today. Fire crews dispatched 17 apparatus to battle the blaze amid a series of small explosions likely from burning paint cans and materials.

Tabit Jr Found Safe in Cincinnati Rooming House

Gallia County authorities report George Tabit Jr former Webster Springs resident located Friday in a Cincinnati rooming house at 910 Plum Street. He had been missing since February 11 and was traced after attempting to sell his automobile to dealer Robert Morris. The car was mortgaged and title cleared by his parents. His mother and F C Christ headed to Cincinnati as news of his whereabouts broke.

Truman Halts Strike Plans In Oak Ridge

President Truman, responding to a plea from AFL unions, halted planned at Oak Ridge bomb plant walkout for at least two weeks. He named a Taft Hartley Act board of inquiry with a report due by March 19. About 900 workers at Carbide and Carbon Chemicals plant faced an 18 cent hourly raise demand plus 3 cents in benefits.

Soviet Progress Show Picketed by Lithuanians

In New York the Soviet exhibit at Rockefeller Center opened amid protests by Lithuanian political refugees outside. The display traced the Soviet Union’s course since the 1917 revolution. Ambassador Alexander Panyushkin made his first public appearance in the city.

Flames Raze Boxing Arena in Philadelphia

Winds drove a late night fire that destroyed the Met Philadelphia boxing arena and former opera house at Broad and Poplar Streets.
