Years of 1907 Show Big Rise in Coal Output Across US

The United States Geological Survey reports 1907 coal production near 450 to 460 million short tons, up about 10 percent from 1906. Anthracite led gains with Pennsylvania output rising over 20 percent, while November shipments set trade records despite a October panic. Bituminous coal rose 7 to 10 percent, though unevenly, as car shortages limited transport early in the year. Four Appalachian mine disasters in December claimed 600 to 800 lives.
