Rural Athens County homeless count faces rural counting challenges
Darlene Lustgarten notes rural homelessness in Athens County differs from urban patterns with families sleeping on couches and unsheltered individuals in nontraditional places. Volunteers conduct annual point in time counts for HUD funding, while biannual unsheltered tallies and annual shelter counts are reported by local Continuum of Care. County efforts emphasize outreach over park bench sightings.

Engineers review options for Route 50W sewer project
Ath en s County Commissioners heard updates on Route 50W sanitary sewer project changes. Two options were costed: expanding to Route 56 via Athens Country Club area and Kramer Lane versus limiting to the southern subdivisions west of Route 50. Expansion could raise 60 percent design costs by 88,850 and add about 1.6 million in construction costs while trimming the project to 60 percent would cut costs to about 54,400. Total project cost would fall from 25.65 million to 17.36 million. County considered a county owned treatment plant at about 8.5 million plus 5 million for capacity, with annual treatment costs higher than city of Athens. Decentralized options were deemed not viable. No decision made.
