Police report a fatal cab shootout on a main street near Topeka at 8 p m. A passenger was wounded and another man fled the scene after the shooting. Officers LR Peterson and Irwin Lins pursued the cab and found its owner missing.

Leonard Massar 67 died at Holzer Hospital from injuries after being struck on West Main Street at Monkey Run by a car driven by Clay Hargraves 26 of Red House West Virginia. Hargraves said he was scared to stop. he was arrested at Pt. Pleasant. Massar, a former coal miner, lived alone on Monkey Run and funeral services are set for Tuesday at 2 PM.
Four CCC youths Anthony Adams Garrett Dunnington Michael Hudran and Frank Tindall were cited for meritorious conduct after rescuing a critically injured girl. While building a fire tower telegraph line they learned a girl was in danger. High waters blocked the road so they carried her along a narrow trail to safety and to a hospital where she was saved.
In Columbus a bill to abolish justice of the peace courts advances in the House Judiciary Committee. The Ohio Bar Association argues the courts belong to horse and buggy days, while J P s and village mayors push back, saying they still serve local justice. The proposal would replace JP work with commissioners if no common pleas judge is available.
Chanleigh England report that Prajadhipok of Siam formerly a reigning absolute monarch abdicated his throne and will be known as Prince Sukhodaya. He had refused to accept Parliament’s limits on his power over 10,000,000 subjects. The abdication was announced Sunday after a formal step late Saturday.
L. Shir Hatfield, cashier of the First National Bank of Pandora in Ottawa Ohio, wrote four letters to Federal officials in Washington a year ago. Last week, about 15 months later, he got a reply stating the letters were called to the proper department's attention.
In a January visit to Athens, Will Rogers recalls meeting Eleftherios Venizelos, praising the Greek statesman as the Grand Old Man of Greece. Rogers notes Greece has many ruins but Venizelos is not one of them and mentions his shared history with Wilson and Lloyd George.
The Associated Press reports Ohio suffered heavy highway deaths with seven killed in Columbus. A sedan plunged into the Scioto River near Mound Street, trapping Mr and Mrs John Kemp and Mr and Mrs Fred Schick at the river’s bottom for eight hours. Three other Columbus victims included Wiley Wright 31 Edwin Noestlich 39 and Edwin Beckett 35 death linked to exhaust fumes.
The Toledo Building Trades Council calls for Ohio unions to back protests against FERA wage scales. Oliver Myers of the Electrical Workers Union warns of a statewide strike. Over 1,009 Toledo FERA workers are on strike with 1,000 more expected. demands include 65 cents hourly for common labor 65 cents for office workers a 52 hour week for laborers and a 24 hour week for skilled workers.
Washington reports a government inventory shows Ohio has 4 071 public works projects estimated to cost 641 475 086 with no formal applications yet. Kentucky lists 2 335 projects totaling 289 722 460 and West Virginia 896 projects at 99 381 350.
State police repelled a 5400 strong miner crowd on Luzerne County courthouse steps to block hearings on an order halting a strike called by United Anthracite Miners of Pennsylvania. Police used football tactics and mounted patrols as petitions circulated for impeachment of Judge Valentine amid union quarrels and prior violence.
Ted Coen, a Bethel's Quality Shop employee, was struck in the head by a baseball tossed by Ohio University students playing catch on West Washington Street. He remained comatose until Monday. police questioned the Palmer House residents and city officials warned of fines for street ball playing.
Zanesville officer investigates Licking River after Robert W. Boyer 56 is found missing for five days while returning home from a job search. Police drag the river for his body.

New York inspectors publicly attributed the Mohawk disaster of January 24 to a misunderstanding in signals. The board said no action should be taken against surviving Mohawk officers after reviewing testimony. The Ward liner Mohawk collided with the Galisman six and a half miles south of Sea Girt New Jersey, sinking with forty five deaths.
Three men were under arrest as police near a solution to the December 27 Pennsylvania passenger train wreck near Linden. Three people were killed and about a score injured when the train crashed into freight cars after a switch was tampered with. one arrestee was a railroad employee and another a former employee, names not disclosed.

Doctors and staff at Truesdale Hospital surround her with letters, gifts, and dolls from across the United States and Canada as she tours the bright surgical suite and the river views above Taunton River.
Cleveland Congressman Martin L. Sweeney announces Monday he will circulate petitions seeking 300,000 signatures to place a constitutional amendment on the November ballot banning the sales tax on food clothing and other necessities. He calls the tax unfair to the poor and says the current rate exceeds stated percentages for the needy.
A tornado struck Forney Texas just before dawn injuring a resident, killing a Negro farmer, and causing extensive damage to homes and seven large buildings. Two cotton warehouses holding 1000 bales were ruined and the depot was uprooted. communication lines were disrupted as the storm moved north. Forney, a farming town 25 miles east of Dallas, faced probable heavy losses beyond the city limits.
J. W. Stroup, chairman of a Callaway mill strike committee, was found beaten roadside near Manchester Georgia and told police four or five masked men kidnaped him from his home and attacked him about 3 a.m. The Callaway mills group began a strike at the Manchester Milstead and La Grange plants, with peace reported elsewhere.
Oliver Wendell Holmes lay secluded in his red brick home as pneumonia weakens his 98 year old body. By noon he remained in a disturbing condition with no sign of improvement and a close friend called it a matter of waiting.
Dayton University fencers co captains Robert Zolg and Larry Libecap were involved in a sabre wound incident last Friday night. Zolg remained in grave condition Monday as Libecap, distressed, kept close bedside watch. Ralph Cade, nine, from The Plains, was hospitalized Sunday with serious injuries at Sheltering Arms Hospital.

Mrs Alma Casey aged 31 broke a 25 year vow against eating fish after yesterday tasting hali but a fish bone lodged in her throat. Physicians removed the bone and stopped further trouble.
Dayton police tighten the frame on the 1927 Christmas Day murder of Patrolman Walter Raush. Suspect William White, 43, in custody for shooting with intent to kill after a street fight left two wounded. Cap Rutter, 37, hospitalized with shotgun injuries, and Rutter’s wife Ruth, 27, involved in a domestic quarrel. Raush was found beaten near a robbery scene. White allegedly claimed involvement and others dispute his account. A sheriff’s guard guards Rutter at the hospital.
The War Department awarded the Beach City Dam contract in Ohio to William Eisenberg and Sons of Camden New Jersey for 843 514 10. The project is part of the Muskingum watershed conservancy district and sits about 20 miles from Canton on the Canton New Philadelphia road in Stark County.
