The Athens Brick Company suffered a major fire that destroyed the factory building while the engine and boilers brick structure were saved. About 75 workers lost jobs, but two million bricks remain on hand to supply local needs. rebuilding is slated within 60 to 90 days with $9000 insurance. Firefighters saved the brick engine area and a quick recovery plan follows.

Indictments Handed Down In Common Pleas Court
A special grand jury met Monday with fifty witnesses examined and three indictments issued. James A. Dean faces obtaining signature by false pretense, Marion Penrod for burglary and larceny, and Robert Mayhugh for non support of a legitimate child. Mayhugh pleaded guilty and posted 1000 dollars bond. Colored Man From Bern Sentenced for Non-Support
P L Gibson a colored man from near Plantsville was tried before Squire E T Rose for non support of his wife and seven children. He was convicted and sentenced to 90 days in the work house and a $10 fine. The family lived in a one room shack and the case costs amount to about $150.

Will Open Coal Mine Near Marshfield In 1900s Era
Jerry Morrow Coal company of Wellston tests two holes on Elliott farm near Marshfield finding a good coal vein at 170 feet and plans further drilling. They bought 33 acres from Douglas Phillips at 35 dollars per acre and 40 acres from Hiram Pidcock at 88 dollars per acre. Additional 1266 acres hold a six month option at 25 dollars per acre for coal. If tests stay strong a shaft and plant may be built nearby, boosting Marshfield’s growth and real estate prices. F. Beverage spearheaded territory assembly and oversees testing.

Funeral of Supt Elsa Armstrong Held at Presbyterian Church
The funeral for Supt Elsa Armstrong was held Friday at 1:80 p.m. Rev G Walton King officiated. The church and local businesses closed, with a large crowd honoring a life of honesty and service. Armstrong, born January 27 1837, died near 79, long connected to the county children’s home. He and Lydia Margaret Carpenter cared for orphans since 1883, leaving a lasting legacy for many whose lives they touched.
