John L. Lewis told soft coal miners east of the Mississippi to work a three day week starting next Tuesday to ease strain as the current contract nears expiration midnight tonight. Miners east of the river will work Tuesday Wednesday Thursday next week and then Monday through Wednesday weekly, with no set end date. West of the Mississippi, operators expect the Taft Hartley contract to hold until Aug 14.
