Storm knocks out Athens Columbus phone lines
A Tuesday storm dumped .86 inches of rain with heavy wind and lightning, interrupting long distance lines between Athens and Columbus and forcing Athens Home Telephone Co to deploy crews to restore service to about 200 telephones. Ohio University power briefly faltered for 15 minutes and Chauncey telephone service was cut when a power line fell. Weather observer Mrs. C. N. France notes cooler temperatures, a 7 degree read at 10:30 am, after a high of 89 and a low of 65. The Hocking River rose to 4.02 feet, swollen by the rains, and wind knocked down tree branches in the city.
