Ohio coal bosses threaten July 15 mining with non-union labor if wage cuts are not accepted. W Haskins of the executive committee says the aim is not to kill the union, but to avoid losing property while hoping union officials meet the proposal.
Lee Hall state president of the miners union told a Messenger reporter in Athens that the international union cannot accept any wage settlement not based on its demands. He said operators must reopen mines on the Jacksonville scale that expired April 1, and oppose the Ohio operators’ plan to resume on the November 1917 scale.
Operators announced a 95 percent minion representation at yesterday's meeting leading to a plan to end the suspension. The proposed wage scale mirrors the 1917 terms with a $5 base plus per ton rates for cutting and loading. A seven member board of adjustment would govern the scale with the supreme court chief justice naming the final members if needed.
Women about town say Mrs Susan Kraus told Prosecutor Peoples during an interview at the Marysville Reformatory that her jet black hair was a wig costing 800 dollars. They claim the wig accounts for part of a large sum involved in the case.
Dr. B. E. Hiatt of Shawnee was chosen health commissioner of the city and county health districts at a joint meeting, succeeding Dr. Ben S. Stephenson. Hiatt will start September 1 with a $4,000 yearly salary and will attend the health institute for two months. Boocks and Deem were other applicants. five votes to four and one. Attendees included Dr. Monger and James Bauman.
In Honolulu on June 30 Maitland and Hegenberger, the two army officers who completed the first nonstop flight from the mainland to Hawaii, asked Hawaii’s senior army officer to back their bid to fly back over the 2,408 mile ocean. They noted the beam device failed but a mariners compass guided them after hearing radio signals Tuesday night.
Cincinnati reports unearthed remains of about 65 bodies during excavation in the south wing of a music hall burial ground. In Ohio, Illinois miners reject proposed wages, insisting on an open shop basis and ceasing compromise efforts. Columbus notes G W Savage says wage reductions won't yield profitable coal and union rejects Ohio operators' offer.
After testimony in the Lick Run Coal and Clay case, Judge Worstell sets July 20 for plaintiffs brief filing and August 1 or later for a decision. The temporary injunction remains in effect as both sides clash over record transcription and peaceful persuasion.
Ohio will begin marking United States highways on Tuesday and finish by Saturday. State highway director George F. Schlesinger said the new federal numbers will replace the old Ohio numbers. Shields will read Ohio and U S with a number, white background and black lettering. State routes will use a map shape design with white letters on black.
Charles Huff and Gail Haines were arrested for intoxication and told Judge John Sbarbaro they could not find suitable work. The judge offered them leadership as executives of the mopupus division, and they accepted, given brooms and mops to clean the courtroom.
The proposed Byrd route is ideal for future liners as it can be navigated by dead reckoning from St Johns Newfoundland to Valencia Island Ireland. It is only about 20 miles longer than the great circle route from New York to Paris.

Attorneys for Dr. Frederick A. Cook, imprisoned for mail fraud, prepared to seek direct Supreme Court review after the New Orleans circuit court of appeals reversed a federal judge's grant of five years probation. Cook remains at Leavenworth until the high court rules.
Hollywood expected an end to the labor dispute in the motion picture industry as Warner Brothers suspended the 10 percent salary cut and producers were forecast to follow the academy of arts and sciences in deferring wage reductions until August 1.
Logan city council approved a 50 year franchise for the Ohio Power Company on Tuesday night by a 5 to 2 vote. The council also enacted a rate ordinance lowering city rates by one cent for ten years, with five members voting yes and two no.
Six people die as Ohio endures a record heat wave with 93 degree readings. Prostration deaths include a 39 year old Cleveland man. five others die while seeking relief from the heat in Zanesville Worthington and Lancaster. Chicago also endures a record hot June 29 with a forecast of 94 degrees and possible thundershowers to bring relief.

Howard Edward Knox 25 Athens and Pauline Danford 23 Athens. Paquale Gallerini 36 Murray City and Anna Biscinimi 36 Murray City. Arthur H. Graumlich 23 Detroit and Grace V. Appleman 33 Nelsonville. Magistrate Pearl W. Helwig designated to officiate.
Willis Harper of Rutland reports his honey bees roam within a mile of his old Jacob Freed farm and return drunk. The sober bees attack and kill the drunken ones, forcing Harper to lose nearly all his colonies. Prohibition officers were contacted for help.
John Jones former head of the Sunday Creek Coal company left a will probated in Newark listing 145 900 to benevolence and an old ladies home to be built in Granville. The bulk of the estate goes to his widow Mia Alice Baxter Jones and their children Francesa J Tyus Sarah Jones and Alice Virginia Jones. Executors are C C Cook James R Fitzgibbon and George K Smith with trustees C C Cook and C S Newton. The estate is described as several millions but exact value was not disclosed.
Deputy state sealers extended the deadline for attaching devices to old gasoline pumps to conform with a stat ewide accuracy standard. The new deadline is September 30 after a June 21 governor’s conference. Attendees included W A Butter and auditors from Athens, Hocking, and Ross counties.
Governor Donahey announces a probe into charges that Youngstown police used beating and kicking to obtain confessions. Special investigator C. H. Sisson will travel to Youngstown next Tuesday to examine the accusations brought by J. B. Compton of the Auto-Bankers' Detective Bureau.
The Ohio Baptist Bible union adopted a resolution at its annual meeting condemning alleged modernist tendencies at Denison University, voiced during last night’s session in Niles on June 30.
United Press reports Commander Richard Byrd and crew approaching land from the Atlantic weather area. Rain and adverse winds threaten the last leg to Paris with guards at Le Bourget and radio bulletins planned as medical aid and receptions are arranged. Berths and hotel suite awaited in the Empress Eugenie’s residence.
Paris reports D Chamberlin and Charles arrived at Le Bourget at 4 05 pm. Chamberlin said he would wait for Byrd to arrive before deciding whether to fly back to New York or sail with Levine and his wife on the Leviathan on July 12.
C. Deran a longtime Fremont attorney and state representative was disbarred by H. W. Jewell of Delaware after findings of moral turpitude and misappropriation of client funds. The ruling followed a hearing before Judge A W Myer in Fremont.
