Luther H. Hodges seventy former North Carolina governor and U S secretary of commerce from 1961 to 1965 leaped from a second story window to escape a blaze at his Chapel Hill home Thursday night suffering a broken leg and smoke inhalation but is in satisfactory condition. His wife is in serious condition at North Carolina Memorial Hospital with smoke inhalation shock and possible heart attack. Firemen found her behind curtains after passing through the smoke filled house to locate her. The fire started in the center of the two story brick and frame residence with unknown cause and heavy interior and exterior damage.
