Dr John Cassey a Pittsburgh radiologist says many birth injuries blamed on defects stem from rough handling in early life. He notes picking up infants roughly swinging or jerking the head causes whiplash movements and occurs across society in many forms and motives.
Cassey told an American Medical Association session that shaking is a major public health risk causing permanent brain damage and mental retardation. He urged a nationwide education program and proposed a sub specialty in pediatric traumatology to study traumatic diseases in children.
