He proposed about 100 plants with 45,000 pounds daily of butadiene from corn to be used by the rubber industry. He said 150000000 more would be needed to convert to tire production. He argued the synthetic rubber would improve tires. British dispatches report Rommel’s Axis force driving a 100 mile push in two days to strike at Matruh 30 miles from the town and 20 miles from the main British line. The attack uses German 21st and 15th Armored Divisions with motorized infantry and captured tanks as Rommel seeks a swift knockout of the Eighth Army.
